I've had an SL10 since august and i'd like to say what i think about it. The first one i had i used it for about 3 months and the IR transmitter on it broke. I returned it 2 Best buy and i got a new ont. a couple days ago a screw fell out on the side. another thing i hate about it is that sthe screen is too dark. If you are thinking about getting an SL10 just pay more and get an SJ20 it'll be worth it in the long run.

I agree, the SL10 is destined for the ebay bargain bin.

Yeah I am currently lookin for a bargain PDA for my wife - Im thinking an "outdated" T615 would be a good buy....the SL10 was not a really good idea but when compared with the ZIRE it looks like a Corvette next to a Chevette......

I just got my sl10 after careful consideration of the low-end of the market. I decided on the Clie over the Zire, and had to restrain myself from buying the sj20. My chief aim was to get a durable, entry-level model to replace my dayplanner. I'm a PDA novice, and the Sl10 does the job splendidly. Eventually it will become a back-up PDA for me. Replacing the AAA batteries also brings certain advantages for my intended use. As for durability, I'll keep you posted.

No justification for another $80 over the Zire for the Sj20. $30 more for the sl10 I could live with. Good luck.

i'd say that the sl10 is not for power users.

good comparison, but the SL10 compared to the NZ90 is like a Ford Tarus next to an H2

Define "power user"

I can do anything with this that I can do with other, more powerfull PDA's. I also own a HP Jornada PPC, a Palm IIIC and a Psion Revo. The Clie will perform allmost any function I ask of it. Want to read books? It can. Want to check your email? It can. Store files? Pics? It can do that too. Play games? Well, not as good as a PS2, but then again, I didn't buy it to play games on.

Things like playing movies or playing MP3's are just nice extras. I own a TV, a DVD player, and a good MP3 player. Do I really want to watch 320x320 movies on something like this? Not really.

In short, yes there are more powerfull PDAs out there, but that does not make this one a bad one. And compared to a Zire, only marginally cheaper, you get 4 times the memory, 4 times the pixels, two extra buttons, a scroll wheel, user-replacable batteries, and a memory stick slot as well. Not to mention the fact that it just looks ten times better then a Zire.

EDIT: Oh and I allmost forgot the backlight!

I used to say the exact same thing, til I bought an NR70. Also, there's a T-series AA battery adapter that gives the same functionality as a AAA powered PDA.

Well Duh. If you bought the top of the range device, of course you'd say that. But the fact remains that the average or even "power user" [you really can't be one with a Palm or Clie, i'm sad to say] will find all that he needs in the SL10, and then some.

If you want real power, my Jornada is much more powerfull and versatile then that Clie NR70 [but that's an entirely different discussion altogether :D ]

The debate comes down to "PDA vs. E-Toy". I bought my SJ20 as a PDA. Having said that, the SL10 has as much PDA power as any other PDA. Don't compare it to $500 E-Toys. It wasn't designed for entertaining teenagers.

I have one of these little babies...maybe not the coollest (except my elementray school kids think it is!) but does the job as well as my Palm M500 did, without the problems. Its a little workhorse, still going after over 6 months, love being able to just pop in batteries when I want them, and its fine for everything I do, even most games. Not fancy, but not a cheap toy either! (Even though it is inexpensive). Beats the ZIRE for sure, and I had an SJ20 but hated the charge up time...actually replaced it with this and I love it. Simplicity beats all!

"Well Duh. If you bought the top of the range device, of course you'd say that."

My point is, I used to bash people who bought this kind of device. Like saying, "I don't need that", or, "it can't be very useful." Well, the point is, I was wrong. If you ever decide to do the same you'll most likely be eating your words like I have already done.

PS: Did I mention that I hate the word duh?

I take it with "this kind of device" you're referring to the Clie NR70?

Like I said, I also own a HP Jornada, a 565. I'd hate to say it: but it's more powerfull then that NR70. I've experienced both the lowest end and the highest end; I'm a veteran from way back when, HP Omnigo, Palm Pilot Pro, Philips Nino. Over the years i've owned more then two dozen PDA's, a good deal of them were Palms. I know what Im talking about. This is a good device; and all the extras on a NR70, while very nice, aren't enough to sway me. I just don't like it that much to spend more on one then I spent on my Jornada or Compaq Ipaq, which were and are still more capable devices then the Clie NR70. But that's just my opinion based on my experience and all the devices i've owned throughout the past decade or so.

*puts on asbestos body armor* Please don't flame me, I said I liked my SL 10 :D

PS: Did I mention that I hate the word duh?

And no, before you start calling me names, Youre not slow-witted or anything :D It's just a natural response for people to defend the devices they own. It's all just one big pissing contest.

Zire=$100
SJ20=$150 - $25 Amazon rebate = $125 (and free shipping)

Of course this depends on when you bought your SL10, but to me the extra $25 dollars over the SL10 sealed the deal for me to get the SJ20.

I got my SL-10 for 65 bucks (open box at best buy) because it had a scratch on the back of the case. Big deal. It works perfect and I like it a lot better than the handspring visor I used to have. I love the hi-res screen and I do have to agree it is a little too dark. But other than that, i love it. It has been great to me.

For all of the 'simplicity is virtue' users out there or novices, don't forget that by changing the font (which is a standard option on the Palm OS and doesn't require any download hacks) makes reading the screen a breeze. I've found the SL10 to be the workhorse I'd hoped for.

FYI, it's now discontinued, so deals are out there if you don't need the latest and greatest PDA.

Oh man, this is not worth a point-for-point arguement. I was just stating my opinion. Sorry if it came across as fact. And I'm glad you don't intend to insult me, because I don't intend to insult you either. :)

Enjoy your PDA, in whatever form it may come in.

I got mine because of the replaceable AAA batteries and the memory stick slot. I am finding that it does everything I want it to do. It does not run out of juice at an time and place when I cannot recharge I carry an extra set of batteries and just pop them in. I do a lot of ebooks. The memory stick is great for my library of books.

The size of the unit is great. It just fits my hand and the jog wheel is easily accesable to turn pages with. The large print setting in palm reader is just fine for me.

I do not play games on it or anything that would require color. On the whole I am extremely satisfied with it. (Crossing my fingers that nothing goes wrong now.)
