SJ-22 buttons going haywire

My wife's SJ22 all of a sudden has button problems. The "date" button acts like the on/off button. The "memo" button has no effect, the "up/down" buttons act like the on/off or the backlight brightness. The Address button sometimes works.

I am unable to Hard reset, since the "hit the 'up' button to clear data" isn't possible - it thinks the 'up' button is some other button!!!

Any ideas? Also - is there another way to hard reset the thing?

If you have it (the SJ-22) set to turn off after so many minutes, turn of that feature then let the battery run down. This will completely reset the whole thing. You may have to leave it down for a couple of days in order for it to take full effect. Don't forget to recharge it.
