View Full Version : I over-estimated the life left in the Palm OS!

I said on Cliesource last week that the Palm OS prolly had 5 years max no matter what... To be fair I already knew of the pending Sony announcement. I think 5 years is too long. Let's face it... Palm announced they will no longer support Mac, Apple leaks an announcement of an uber-PDA and Sony bails... Translation, imminent death...

I believe that within a couple years the market for PDAs will be nil... they will be left on the Target shelves where the cheap digital organizers are now. The main market will be portable entertainment devices like iPod and PSP. For business/task users they will have 3 options: Smartphone, Mobile Windows device and mobile mac device. The technology to miniaturize the OS and hardware is on the horizon for both Mac and PC. I mean, who would want a Palm device when you can have the exact same size device with all the functionality of your home computer?!? Battery life and storage are the 2 main holdbacks and they just released a 12gb HD the size of a quarter.

Thanks, Ash. I think I've had just about enough "insider" information from you for a while.

they just released a 12gb HD the size of a quarter. So? The beauty of solid-state storage is its ruggedness in being used on the move. I would be wary of a HD-based PDA. I baby my Powerbook, I don't want to have to do that with my PDA (as much!) ;)

Palm announced the end of Apple support because iSync renders it moot.

You seem to be flaunting the fact you 'Knew' all about this impending announcement...AFTER THE FACT. Kinda easy to do, no?

I don't recall a PEEP outta you about this over at ClieSource.

Where was your 'Bombshell' information then? :p

Yep.

That's what we all need...a HDD based Color PDA with a battery life of 1 hour & 38 seconds! :p

Its going to be quite a long time for a PDA sized computer to be either affordable or practical. I for one have no interest in a fragile HD PDA with terrible battery life and a $1000 price tag.

The mobile smart phones will be the biggest thing to cut into the market share for PDAs, but Palm is already making headway into that market so its not like its going to destroy them. I think we may see a time when Palmone offers more PDA phones, but the standard PDAs will still have a place in the market.

Sour grapes... I didnt start this as a neener neener thread. My only contact in the Sony world is a VP in the video game sect. I was on the verge of buying a UX50 and she told me to wait because the price would fall off after Sony announced they were leaving the market. At that time I decided to sell off my NX70 and get a P900. She says there are mutiple incarnations of the PSP, at least one of which will have PDA functionality. I know this is not breaking news and it is not my obligation to share things that are told to me in confidence.

It is her opinion that Sony will continue its relationship with Ericsson and possibly re-enter the handhelp market with a miniatured PC in 18 months or so....

ash =o)Regarding battery life, I quote part of an article from Brighthand a few days ago:Nano-batteries
Scientists and engineers at Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) think they are close to coming out with a new kind of battery with vastly greater capacity than anything that is available today.

According to an article in eTaiwan News, engineers at ITRI's Materials Research Laboratories believe they will soon have a battery capable of powering a mobile phone for a month. Their goal is to have one out within five years that can run for 100 days.

These were developed with the aid of nanotechnology, hence the name Nano-batteries. These are made by stacking polymer electrolytes with special materials. Each battery's anode is made of a lithium-nickel-cobalt material, while the cathode end is nanometer-scaled graphite sheets.

Though they were created in a government-funded lab, this research has emphasized commercial applications from the beginning. Several Taiwanese companies are already testing this new type of battery, and they should be on the market in the near future. They expect them to be used in mobile phones, handhelds, and even electric cars.

Oh, but it's OK to break that confidence now? I wonder how the folks at Sony might react to the fact that a VP was flapping her jaw about the demise of the Clie to an outsider? You've certainly given enough information in this post that it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out who this female VP is if someone at Sony wants to take some action.

Remind me never to tell you anything in confidence.

If you care to search my username at Cliesource you will see I never have said anything before it has been officially announced. Nothing I have said cant be dug up with a Google search. It is not like I am some random guy, I am a director/cinematographer that works with Sony frequently (not executives though) in fact I did a project this week for Sony in NYC.

Bottom line is that I think this will be good for everyone eventually. I suspect some killer phones from SE and some killer versions of the PSP.

Which has what to with breaking the confidence of that VP who told you the news? You put her job at risk by posting your after-the-fact details. This is much worse than repeating the rumor before the event without attribution.

You may be a "director/cinematographer" but, just like the rest of us, you're still just a random guy. A narcissistic, unethical guy, but still just random.

Wait i dont get the Mulitple PSP thing. It would confuse people to have out different psps at the same time. If its true that would be a horrible move for Sony

Lol. These assumtions are followed by Palm will do nothing for 5 years and watch everything. Dude, Palm, as these technology is kicking into market, will adopt these technology into their own systems. Competition is always tight but Palm seems to keep a stand in the market share. The only thing is, I think it needs faster progression, not to beat the PPC since we sort of did already, but to prepare for the future. Good luck Palm, we in full support!

This is the same guy whose "source" predicted some sort of super-Clie to be available back in Nov'03.

He said to look in Cliesource and here it is right here:

Ok, enough. Close the thread because this aint making any good of our relationships in 1Src. We should be supportive and I think Ash gets the point. I'm in no position to speak for everyone but all I can say is that 1Src had a good start (a little bumpy on the transition) and now we need to make this community great and running smooth.

Yes, let's close this thread before we cause damage to Ash's fragile ego. Did you see a post from Ash that he "got" the point? He's a bloviating, pompous blowhard that likes to make guesses based on his "inside" knowledge and put other people's jobs in danger when he reveals his little secrets. If you want to make guesses with the hint of "insider" knowledge and you get called on it, that's life. Then maybe Ash will get the point and stop using words like "uber-Clie".

"To me, the REAL issue is that this is CLEARLY and obviously a bridge model that has, IMHO, a fairly short life. If my friend at Sony is correct, there will be an OS6 uber-Clie before thanksgiving that will have EVERYTHING I have wanted, not just some so-so upgrades. Most likely, 64mb+ ram, faster processor, etc. I bet the NX80s are worth $300 by years end...

If you couldnt resist the NX70 to NX80 upgrade how will you resist the NX80 to NX100??? Counting depreciation, you will have spent over $1200 on the NX100...OUCH!"

this is a direct quote i copied and pasted...........
Now you tell me  was it released?! oh well :p
