View Full Version : Mounting the memory stick to the desktop

I have a new NX60 that I am attempting to get up and running. So far I have downloaded Missing Sync and successfully sync'd with my ibook running OS X 10.2.4, however, I am unable to find the memory stick (128mb) despite resetting and restarting, and making sure MS Import is connected. As I understand it, the memory stick should appear on my desktop or appear in the source column of my itunes window. Where is the darn thing? I would very much like to load some MP3s on my new NX60. Advice welcome. :)

with the clie in the cradle you need to run ms import on the handheld. it will mount on the desktop. when you are through, throw it away on the desktop and then hit disconnect on the handheld.

Thank you for your reply! With the Clie in the cradle, I have tried to do so. Basically, I open MS Import and it shows the clie linked to the terminal icons and occasionaly says " connected to pc" above this (not always) and then has a "disconnect" button beneath it. The screen then remains frozen until I remove the clie from the cradle, and only then does the touch screen register anything. Nothing vaguely resembling a memory stick appears on my desktop.

not trying to be a smartass (despite my sig) but is the cradle connected directly to the computer or is in on a usb hub? being on a hub sometimes makes a difference.
are you able to do the regular sync?
if all else fails, try uninstalling ms and reinstalling with the latest version (i believe 3.0.5).:)

Unfortunately the cradle IS connected directly to the usb port on my ibook. Interestingly, it connects thu a hub just fine to my husband's pc and he was able to put some MP3 files on the clie.
Yes, the regular sync works just fine on the ibook.
I did try to reinstall MS import on the Clie, but could not find it listed in the menu to delete. The Clie CD that came in the box has MS Export on it, but not Import. Apparently that came already on the NX60 from Sony. How do I find MS Import on the handheld and 3.0.5 to delete and reinstall, respectively? Please send instructions for idiots as I must be doing something very simple wrong. If you mean Missing Sync 3.0.5. I did already reinstall that on my ibook once. I didn't uninstall first, however. How do you do that?

I am having the exact same issue as Alchemy. Hotsync works just fine, but MS does not show up at all!!! in fact when I use MS import on my handheld is crashes my handheld everytime!!!
-so now I've resorted to using my PC at work for ms importing and my Mac at home for hotsyning!! this system works fine... but I'd really like to do everything on my mac!

If you are using any overclocking hacks such as FastCPU, turn them off before running MSImport. I had the same problem.

Also i've turned off all extensions on my Mac (except for just the base OS extensions and missing synce extensions) ....still no luck mounting memory stick??? I can hot sync directly to my memory stick if I drag items to the "memory stick" foler w/in my palm desktop folder but this takes forever...
...still no memory stick on my desktop!

eric2002,
By saying that you 'turned off extensions' does this mean you are running Mac OS9 or OSX?
I think, if I read the website properly, that this software v3.0.5 - which is the version that supports the NZ90 - is for Mac OS X. If that is the case, and if you are running OS9, then you are going to have a problem - probably the one that you are having.
Per the website, if you want to sync with OS 9, you need to use an old version - version 2.2.1. Looks to me like what you need to do is to upgrade to OS X if you want to get your NZ90 to work with your mac.
If you are running OSX, I would suggest downloading a fresh copy from the website, installing it again and trying again. I have no problems using OSX - 10.2.4 and the newest production version (v3.0.5) from the website.
As an aside, I tried v3.0.5b4 as a beta and it didn't work. When I downloaded again as released, it said the same rev, but it worked. So, there are differences and getting a fresh copy may be all it takes.

So, I got an e-mail from Missing Sync saying to dump everything on my new Clie (ugggg) and plug in ONLY the USB from the cradle and try to mount the Memory Stick that way with 10.2.4 OS X and 3.0.5 Missing Sync. So, I did, and now not only will the memory stick not mount, but it won't hot sync, which it did fine before. What is the deal? I actually asked them to send me a copy of 3.0.4 Missing Sync, thinking that maybe it is a bug in .5, but they didn't. If anyone has any ideas please help. PLEASE. :)

Have you tried mounting a memory stick with an external memory stick (USB) reader. I think you need to try this with the stick you have in the pda. If that doesn't work, then its probably a problem with the stick itself.
If you can, try mounting any stick or CF or whatever to your desktop to verify that that is working properly - that is the part that exercises the code in OSX.
If that works properly and the missing sync software doesn't work, then it would be related to Missing sync. If it doesn't then you might need a clean install of OSX (you can do that from the Jaguar disks and not wreck your other software).
I bought a MS reader from CompUSA for $17 so its not a huge deal. Point of fact, its a good idea to have one anyhow.

Have the exact problem that Alchemy does. Have an SJ30, bought MissingSync. The CLie syncs without problem. I can load pictures to the MS using SplashPhoto program. Running OS 10.2.4 (also same problem in 10.2.3). Tried everything that MarkSpace suggested, such as hard reset of the Clie, direct connection to iMac USB instead of hub, just like the others mentioned. Cannot see the MS mounted yet. The suggestion to reload the Mac OS is to me less than elegant. If this is a problem that others have, I would ask MarkSpace to address. Otherwise the program does me no good. When I sent them an email about this, I received the recommendations above. Now what?

I have encountered the sam problem as everyone else. I have had no luck with any of the listed reccomendations. It can't possibly be this difficult. Someone out there knows the secret and it's a simple thing. In the meantime I have found a round about way that I'm sure takes more time than necessary however, it works. Here we go...I:
>convert my selected music to the MP3 version and save it
>connect my dock to my i mac via the port
>place my NR70U on the dock
>turn it on
>open my i tunes folder, located inside my "home" folder
>open the palm desktop folder...hot sync...Install handheld files
>select the songs I would like to download to my clie
>drag them onto the hot sync window
>and, presto, the transfer begins
>once the transfer is complete I hit the Hot Sync button and we're in the money.
I regret to add...it takes quite a while but, it works.
I'm not sure however how to remove music since it doesn't mount. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
God Bless You

that's what I am doing also "simplyclied"...importing my files through a hotsync. it's the only way I've found for me to get mp3's, etc.. on my Clie w/ my mac.
i think i am going to just buy a MS card reader for $19 ...this will solve all my problems! ...Missing sync works, but seems to not work great for everyone all the time.

Just another voice on the subject but...
I too cannot mount my memory stick on the desktop of my tiBook and everything that has been listed has been tried. Also my system is fairly basic running the latest ver. of Missing Sync and 10.2.3 on the Mac (I heard that 10.2.3 had some problems so for once I've held off updating until they seem to be resolved).
My NZ90 Syncs just fine, but still no Memory Stick or iPhoto access... DAMN.
I've basically resigned myself to waiting until my new 17"aiBook arrives (hopefully around the end of the month, yeah right) and see if everything works then on a fresh system.
I suspect there is something on either my Mac or my Clie that's causing the bugger to not mount properly and that may be resolved with a fresh Mac! All my Powerbook does when I try to mount my Memory Stick is to "freeze my Clie".
Cheers all!

Sorry to reply to my own post, but I meant the 10.2.4 upgrade of the Mac Jaguar OS had reported difficluties, not 10.2.3.
Opps...

Hi again,
I think you're correct in saying it could be one of the two. However, all my stuff is new "Ditch". An i book running 10.2.4, missing sync 3.0.5 and Palm Desktop 4. my clie is new NR70U, and a new memory stick 64MB. I've pretty much exceeded my unexpected investment. That's a pretty chunk of deniero. If all these new gadgets aren't compatible that really sucks buffalo wings. I'm tapped and not interested in additional gadgets. I want the ones I paid for to work out the box. Oh! I forgot to add that when I connect my "Clie" via MS Import my i photo starts. What's with that? It's all confused and just takes up a mess of time I don't really have.
HELP, I need a little HELP, Please !
Thanks
again
God Bless You.

Well I too have the same problem as everyone else. I have a brand new Clie nx70v and and Imac 17 inch flat screen. I have OS X 10.2.4 and missing sync 3.05. No problem hot syncing but ms import does not work. The clie freezes until I physically remove it from the cradle and nothing happens on the mac's desktop. Per mark space's instruction, I hard reset the clie and then re-formatted the memory stick and still nothing.
My question is this: has anyone who has had this problem, solved it by purchasing the separate memory stick reader...if so, I'll go for it, if not, I'm just giving up in frustration.

I originally had this problem with the beta of 3.0.5. That was cured when it was formally released.
I also have a memory stick reader and this works just fine for getting photos back and forth. In point of fact, it is my preferred method since you are not consuming pda battery power sitting in the cradle looking like a memory stick.
Where the missing sync s/w helps is in downloading mp3 stuff. then you need to open the audio application and missing sync handles this well. i was able to do this with a memory stick reader too but it wasn't as clean and there were some issues. mp3 isn't a big issue for me since i have an iPod that i use for music.
One word, I never use my cradle anymore, and i wonder if that might not be the issue. i use the boxware minisync cable (charges and syncs) or the sony extra power supply with a dongle. i always thought the cradle was not well though out and i don't want to have to carry it anywere.
the other question that i have, and you might want to take this up with markspace, is exactly how important is the installation process. as prev noted, i had probelms with this with 3.0.5 beta but not when i installed the formal version. however, i did have problems with the first attempt but then i downloaded the palm software (desktop) too and then did the missing sync install. so, essentially, this was a 'clean install' of both the palm and the markspace stuff.
I think what happens is that missing sync installs an extension that replaces the palm usb extension. i wonder if this in fact happens it is sees the 'right' extentsion in place. therefore, if you do a clean install of the desktop (palm) and then missing sync in that order, that might be significant.
Bottom line, i would carefully follow the installation instructions, right down to installing the palm desktop. I think the order is very important.
