So... I just got this new Zire 31 given to me.... I'm a complete PDA newbie... so be gentle. :p

I've found a bunch of games on the net and I'm loading 'em all on my Zire... but most of them don't work properly... and by "don't work properly" I mean, they load up just fine... they don't crash (well... if they do I just Delete them) and the game will start just fine... but for some reason, almost none of them seem to "jive" with the controls on the Zire 31.

It's got that directional pad thing in the middle, and that usually never seems to do anything and then only two buttons on the sides of the pad thingy. (I've noticed that most PDAs have four or more)

So basically, I can't seem to make use of most of the games that I download because the directional controls that they're programmed to "expect" don't exist on my Zire 31. I'll open up a game and press every single button on the Zire, but usually nothing happens... or else... some things will happen and others won't. In one game (it's a "Dig-Dug" style game) I can go down (by pressing down, no less) and go to the left (by pressing the right app button... go figger) but that's it... pressing up does nothing... pressing all the other directions on the pad do nothing and the other app button does nothing.... the game is pretty much unplayable because of this.

It basically goes something like that for almost all my games... little to no directional/action capabilities based on the buttons I have to choose from. Only the fully "tap-screen" games work in their entirety. There are some games that will allow you to set which buttons do what... but even that doesn't quite work. I set the "Release" function one game to the "Down" button and it works... but if I set the "Release" function to the "Up" button, then pressing Up does nothing. Why must it torture me so??? :(

So.... is this an issue with the Zire 31 just because it has less buttons and most games are programmed for 4 button PDAs... or am I just a total retard who's unable to figure out something as simple as a PDA. :p

Welcome to Palm OS and palmOne City WATYF.

You have run into the problem with the "entry level" palmOne PDA. They are simpler because they don't have all the buttons of the Zire 71/72 and Tungsten lines. All the "higher" units have a directional pad and four application buttons.

The Zire/21/31 line are great for basic PIM (contacts, calendar, todo, memo) and other functions, but really aren't designed for button driven games.

If you want to use your Zire more for games then you may want to consider upgrading to a TE that has all the features of the Zire 31 with a sharper high-resolution display, more memory, and Documents To Go for only $50 more.

Besides button issues, Zire 31 screen is not great for fast action type games because of slow refreshing and ghosting. Sorry to say this, but if your primary reason to get a PDA is gaming, you chose a wrong one. But, for PIMS and other data management, Zire 31 is great and a good value.
