The Palm Desktop with Zire72 lets me install software on expansion card, but they don't run :(

Is there a trick?

I have used other operating systems and they handle RAM as C: and Card as E: so nothing changes. Everything transparent to the user who could be a total anti-tech. Why is the option there at all then? Some future enhancement?

All softwares don't run on sd they must (some softwares) be in ram.......

Yeah, same as you would on any Palm. Get PowerRun or ZLauncher.

PowerRUN allows you to move things from RAM to card but run as if still in RAM.

Hotsyncing stuff to card rarely enables them to run, that's more for pics and music.

Found lots of information here. Baseline: Only 24 MB for programs. Using a trial of ZLauncher but not sure if I'll keep it.

Do you know what document readers support reading files from VFS? Because I am unable to use Acrobat and PalmDoc get their files from expansion card :(

thanks a lot

just read the initial post...

remember, no program is run directly frrom vfs. The executable is copied to ram first and run from there!!!

thanks a lot, yeah if you are talking about XIP (execute in place) I know that few embedded platforms do that correctly.

I figured out that "launchable databases" is another issue and I can't click to launch even from ZLauncher. Just downloaded FileZ and the version I got has no launchable flag :(

I now know things that are taken for granted in WindowsCE are a luxury in the Palm world :( and you have to pay :(

WOW now I need to move all databases to memory mark them launchable and move them back :(

The same things won't even show the options if the files is on the memory card. I will write a PC application and use my USB reader to turn on "launchable" bit for every PDB.

AND worse DELL launches its bluetooth PDA even with WIFI a week after I ordered this total piece of junk, that too for only $273 :( I wish I waited :(

WHAT is the problem?? Acrobat Reader, Area Codes, BackupMan, BDicty, Converter, FileZ, HandyShopper, PalmReader, Speedy, some games and many more all run perfectly from cards using OS5.2.1 (T3). My e-books, HandyShopper data files, and other data files are in other directories on the cards, and pulled in automatically. I used PowerRun with pre-OS5 Palms, but it's not needed with OS5. Much as I loved PowerRun, OS 5 works much better. The Zire has an even newer OS that should work as well, or better with expansion cards. I don't know what has changed in the Zire's OS, but my T3 needs executables to be in the "/Palm/Launcher/" directory. The Palm Installer places executables there automatically. Most data files can also be kept in that same card directory, but many programs specify alternate directories where data files can reside (this is a neater approach). Read your documentation and I'll bet it will all work fine!

Maybe he just doesn't have the patience to learn his machine correctly. Another victim of canonlyusewindozeitus.

I am beginning to wonder whether he's just not bothering to read the manual, or whether we're just being trolled?

I have been working to reduce my RAM footprint on my TC to see if I could move to a 72 and I have moved so much stuff to my card that I only have about 12MB of RAM in use. Everything runs off the card courteousy of ZLauncher. It can be done and ZLauncher is rediculously cheap for all it does. ZZ Techs is really undercharging for such a great program.

I am sure it is a case of having used something so much that it is the only way you know as CWolf said. I know many people claim PPC is intuitive and simple to use because it emulates Windows, but I find it confusing, counterintuitive and difficult to use. Of course I have 5 years of Palm experience....

I have to agree to a certain extent and I own an Ipaq 1940 as well as my Zire 72 (I do software tests and reviews for both platforms). Whilst the PPC 2003 interface is nicer and easier to use than previous versions, I just like being able to launch all my programs with one tap. Admittedly I have my most used PPC programs on my today page, but it's just not the same.

The thing is on the desktop I am not a windows user, I use Linux. I develop in Linux, I develop in J2ME MIDP as well. I ordered a Palm thinking it will be better than PPC as much as Linux is better than windows. But Palm is not opensource and the Zire72 is not upgradable.

I dont want to launch a program and then open the document. I want to launch the document causing the program to launch and open it, which infact works with Plucker because it makes the PDB such.

For everything else most e-books and PDF files during copy do not turn "launchable" on for the PDB file, and all the software which have the ability to turn it on, won't even show the menu when the file is on the SD card :(

So I plan to put the SD card in a USB reader and ask my software to scan for PDBs and turn on the bit, although finding documentation of the file format will be another project.
