View Full Version : Losing my MP3 Capabilities!
Ok this is weird. I had my brand new NR70V in the car the other day and plugged it in with an adapter to my stereo to listen to some MP3's. It made a popping noise like the contacts were messed up or something. But my stereo is weird and has done this before. Eventually it worked fine I just had to adjust the plug. (I've got an 1/8" Aux port on the radio.)
So today I go to waste a perfectly good 5 minutes on the Zap demo- again- and there's no sound! With the headphones or the regular speaker! I tried everything- even did a hard reset and there's still nothing! The system sounds, beeps, and polyphonic jazz work just fine, but no MP3! The player plays just fine, so I think the chip is in good condition. What do I do?!
I'm thinking that it's the radio's fault, but is there anything else that would cause this, and, more importantly is there something I can do to fix it?! (Like a chineese website somewhere and a piece of folded paper... :D )
Help!

Hi There,
I can't really help you solve the problem, but I can let you know that you aren't the only one to have sound weirdness occur on the clie. I have a t665c and recently my mp3's won't play on the internal speaker on the clie (actually they play incredibly faintly - I have to push the clie against my ear to hear it). All my other system sounds and game sounds work though. I've spent an hour and a half on the phone with sony and they haven't a clue either.
Good luck!!
Colleen
Man what a bummer! I listened to mine and I can hear a faint buzz when an MP3 is "playing". It stops when the song stops, so it's definately related. Too weird. I wish there was a place I could send it to get a cheap fix. Oh well, I really only listened to the MP3's as a novelty anyway. (So much for my hi-end investment though... )

I don't know if this is worth a try for you (I tried a similar update for the T665 and it neither improved nor worsened the situation). This is an update for the software for your clie and if you look at the issues it resolves, some of them are related to sound and the speaker....

It solved most of my Clie issues. Yeah, there's a chance it'll fix it.
Alrighty, I'm giving it a shot
Ok, the link isn't working! Is it just the regular system update at sony's update page for the NR70v?!
Never mind, same thing :D
I won't panic.... I won't panic.... I won't panic.....

HI there,
sorry about the link not working. If you go to http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/
and select your handheld, the software update link is there.....
Hope it works.
Colleen
Have you tried a soft reset? The clie system update will force a reset, so it may appear to fix your problem...

Just yesterday I was putting on my coat with my headphone and remote wires going from my inside coat pocket, down my sleeve to the remote and back up to my ears. Anyway, it was dry and there was a lot of static electricity I could feel. And I heard some crackling in my earphones. My heart skipped because I know what static electricity does to electronics. Now there is a buzz in the background that wasn't there before. It's not too bad as I can't hear it when the music is playing but if the song fades in or out slowly I can her it. Maybe something similar happened with your Clie only on a larger scale. Static electricity can build up in some electronic systems if they are not grounded properly.

been there, done that. Support sucks - if it was good, do you think we would need all of these user groups to help us figure problems out......
One week later.....
Ok now this is really weird! I got the system update and still nothing worked. So I gave it up for loss. On the outside I was fine. "No, I really did not care about MP3's. Really. REALLY!!!" :( But on the inside I was in sackcloth and ashes.
Well a few days later my G2 screen protector came in and I "enjoyed" learning how to cram that lovely piece of plastic under my screen. I really had to force it around and then... MY SCREEN DIDN'T RESPOND ANYMORE!!
So I'm about to pitch the thing out the window and forget about it, but pull a soft reset and lo and behold... the screen works and the MP3 works now too!!! Figure that out out.
I can only assume that the reset never took when I did the system update and then finally it worked. It still acts hairy though. Sometimes the mp3's will play right along, with no sound at all until I adjust the volume up or down and it clicks right back on. Really odd.
I'm tossing around the idea of calling up Sony tech "support". My unit is a refurb that I got off eBay. (Prolly won't mention that over the phone... :D )
