The first thing I would install would be Uninstall Manager!

Then anything else will be safe.

Agreed! I wouldn't put anything on my T3 until I had Uninstall Manager monitoring everything. Next thing would be ZLauncher. Datebk5 would be my next, as I live off of it every day. Then check out my website for other ideas.

FWI, Docs to Go Pro already comes in the Flash.

Kewl - Oh, one thing you may definately want is PXA Clocker, there is a guide to making the most of your T3 battery with PXA Clocker on my website...

I haven't charged my T3 (apart from quick HotSync) in about 3 days now and have used it a few hours a day...

After Uninstall Manager would be BackupBuddy and BBVFS. Then ZLauncher.

Personally, I would try to learn my way around the new palm BEFORE adding anything to it. Set up your owner information and the security if you need it. Learn your way around G2 if you haven't used it before. Install any included conduits you may need and check for any updates from PalmOne for the T3 and the desktop software.

If you are going to be doing any amount of text input, go to exideas.com & check out MessagEase. It comes in a number of flavors - I use MessagEase STamp, which needs to be registered, but is well worth every penny. There are other implementations & might still have some free ones.

It is a 'stamp' which has the letters in the alphabet arranged in terms of frequency of access. It has many other features like memory locations for frequently entered text, like shortcuts, but much simpler & more robust. Be sure to install the For T3 files!!! this is a fix that Palm1 has told developers to include & makes it work like a charm w/the toolbar & rotated view.

You can even customize the keyboard to use specialized characters that you need & you can save this &/or go back to standard as needed. The correspondence of the two diff sides i.e. alph & numeric & their use of locations for extended characters is brilliant. This enables you to write w/less lifting of stylus fm keypad i.e. there is a stroke fm the I towards the outside (diagonally) which generates the Enter stroke, & diagonally down to left fm E gives comma & straight down stroke fm E gives period. Look up robust in the Palm app dictionary & there is a picture of MEST!

It has the ability to place numbers on one side & letters on the other. It has powerfully integrated extended character capabilities; and with a little practice & time for comfort you will see faster & easier entry.

One proviso, the image files which support the stamp aren't backup friendly. So you have to have a backup program which allows you to exclude files from being backed up, or you need an ext SD card to store these files in a storage directory. Then you run MEST & T3 will create a stub file which you can use & just be sure to delete the stamp image files. They are MEST-007ani & MEST-ANI007 .prc

I have used both methods described above & found them to be equally successful & it depends on which you feel more comfortable with.

The developer is responsive & is working on a solution for this, Palm1 is not providing API's....

'nuff said.

Enjoy your new toy!

Thanks everyone! I still haven't had much time to mess around with it, however it's lunchtime now so I'm going to see what kind of touble I can cause.

So it sounds like I'll probably:
1) Get the unit setup to my liking and get familiar with the Palm OS;
2) Install Un-Install Manager;
3) Install PXA Clocker and Tweak.

I guess then I'll work on finding apps that I like and setting those up. Does anyone have a good website or two that lists freeware Palm apps?

Thanks again!

Software sites you might enjoy perusing:

www.palmgear.com
www.handango.com
www.freewarepalm.com

Good luck.

I would read the manual at least twice and try everything is shows at least once. Then I would install the Palm patch to the OS that is if its not their already. After that I would install BackupBuddy (mentioned above and free). After that its nothing but fun fun and more fun.

This is good advice! This way you can see what normal behavior is like, in case later you suspect a third-party app is causing problems.
Then as suggested, make your first third-party app Uninstall Manager or InWatch.

Don't forget...have fun with it, you've got a really great Palm there!

Yep :)

Today I'll try to do my first HotSync from work. We use crappy Novell and Groupwise, so I may have to get a little trixie to get everything to sync up. Some of the Palm users at work are doing this. Others just re-key everything into Palm desktop. Oye!

I'll let you know how it goes.

Why uninstall manager?

I have not done so, lots of apps

Could you explain what this does?

Exactly what files do you uninstall?

What features do you lose?

Thanks

Uninstall Manager creates a record of all the files installed with and created by an application, so you can completely remove an app whenever you want, without leaving the random garbage that is sometimes created. Personally, I never liked it since it was an extra step I had to go through when installing files. I usually just use the delete function with Zlauncher which seems to do pretty well at removing ALL files associated with the app you want to get rid of.

You need to read my review at http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/software/Palm_uninstallers.htm. It explains the value of uninstallers in general and Uninstall Manager in particular. Although ZLauncher does a nice job getting rid of the stuff associated with the deleted apps creator ID, it does nothing for the sneeky stuff.

Very true, but I've found that most of the flotsam left over like that is generally only a few bytes per file and not worth the extra hassle of Unistall Manager's "sand box" for me. Nice review though!

I test a lot, so I would have a garbage dump full of stuff after a short time. But even if it was only a few bytes per file and a few files, those are bytes for which I paid good money and developers have no right to steal them from me.
