Just bought mmplayer and it is amazing it can do so much, its way better than kinoma cos mmpayer uses the raw file (mpeg, avi etc) instead of having to convert it, like kinoma. I converted a movie after i got it for 90mb ive got 2hrs and a bit this hab lots of high motion scenes in it. I converted another one that was only 49mb (1hr 30mins).
If you gonna watch a movie on your zire get mmplayer!!!!
Peace out:cool:

Sounds good - is it just a player or can it convert files to Palm size screens and save space?

Oh it is a player and a music player(mp3), in fact it plays most media files that a computer does, have a look on their website for all the info - www.mmplayer.com, try their free download!
With the program itself it has a volume, brightness, sound pan and a contrast adjustment. Also which is very important it has an amp to make quiet movies and songs louder.
All you have to do is compress the file using some software, put
it onto your memory card and your are set. I got a file that was around 6GB down to 96mb!
If you need any more on the matter don't hesitate to ask.

Sounds great. What software do you use for compression? I have a few but not got round to testing them all yet...

For rippiing the DVD files from the disk i use DVD DECRYPTER.
For minemising the file to a more friendly size for the computer i use FLASKMPEG.
And for changing it so the zire 71 will understand it (on mmplayer) i use VIRTUAL DUB.
Also you will need the DivX codec.
The great thing is that all the software to do it is free except for the mmplayerClick here for the link on how to encode it (http://tek.8m.net/mmplayer_DVD_copying.htm) - it explains it in a detailed way.
Get back to me soon if all goes well or if you need any more help.
HAPPY ENCODING

Just curious does it support Quciktime, as well for something that is better than Kinoma i.e. you don't have to convert the raw file, sure sounds like from this thread there is a lot of conversion going on? It would be nice to see an analysis/review - pros/cons of the two...

for ripping from dvd, i use dvdx.
to convert and compress from anything format, i use eo video.
since the ver 0.2.3, mmplayer has supported a mov decoding, but it never works out with any of my mov files. i don't know why.

You dont convert it you compress it into a smaller file size. mmplayer does not yet play quicktime but it is planned for the future. And it is better than Kinoma in many ways:
say you commpressed a file from 3GB to 50mb and then you try to convert it to kinoma it will not fit on a 64mb sd card so kinoma must make the file bigger.
Kinoma player is ok but you cannot get as much out of it as mmplayer

i just don't get it, quicktime movie is in mov format right?
if it is not, so what kind of mov decoding that mmplayer could use?
MMplayer doesnt support quicktime (.mov) format. It supports .mpg1, 2 and 4 (.mpeg4 includes the DivX and Xvid formats - best video compression formats there are currently), and of course .avi.
I watch movies of DVD quality on my T3.. Kinoma can play that quality but an .avi of DVD quality on the T3 (say around 180MB) is 600MB once converted via Kinoma.

How does your t3 handle fast scenes? DOES IT NOT GET BITTY AT TIMES?
can i ask what software do you use to compress your files?

The T3 is fine with just about anything, it has a 400 mhz cpu!

How come when I try to fast forward the movie on MMPlayer using the slider, it doesn't work?

What edition of mmplayer is it and is it registered?

[Sorry it took so long to respond, but i haven't been by my computer for a few days.]
Version 0.2.9 and it is registered.
It seems to work on some movies but not on others. I use Pocket DVD to convert my DVDs to AVI.

It may depend on the size of the file, bitrate may be too high. I use another method but it doe take a long time to do but it is worth it for the outcome. I have listed what i use above in a post.
What sort of file sizes do you get with pocket DVD, is it a good piece of software?

I like the software. It is much more user-friendly and less time consuming than your way. However there are less encoding options and it records directly from the DVD, hence many times it must be delayed due to bufferring problems. I find that I can get a high quality movie onto a 256mb card with room to spare.

Do you have a Zire 71 sdjay? cos i think that it gets rather bitty when their are fast action sequences, quite blocky, dont you think? Or do you have a way to fix this?
Downloaded the trial of pocket DVD to see if it worked their any other software to do this in one go like Pocket DVD?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that. If you asked "Is there any other software that can do the same [easy interface and quick encoding, but at a cheaper price], I haven't found any.
Yes, I have a Zire 71. After playing with the settings, I finally got the program to work.
I don't really watch any action movies, but so far I've not had any trouble with the ones I've watched.

Hello fellow Palmonecity addicts, I have been reading this site for a while and have learned many useful tips from it's users. Today I decided to register to share some tips to other users. In response to the the quote above, I think I can help. Yes I know of software that will do your movie conversion like Pocket DVD in one step, and to boot; it's Free and open source software. Check out http://fairuse.free.fr/index.html This program is excellent and makes movie conversion simple and easy. It also lets you select specifically how big the final file size is to be. A 2hour movie will easily fit in 200mb's and it looks great on MMplayer. Hope this helps!!!!

I came across a step by step quide on how to use Fairuse. This was posted in another forum by threddy, and I will include it here. Thanks to threddy.
1) Download FairUse Wizard
it's free, open source, and downloaded here: http://fairuse.free.fr/
2) Put your DVD in the tray
3) Start FairUse Wizard.
<- in FairUse ->
1) Choose English (or Francais if you want )
2) Choose Create new project, name it, and choose a Folder on
a drive with atleast 6 GB of free space, press Next
3) Choose your DVD-Drive
4) Choose the right chain! A DVD is divided into different "tracks"
called chains. The biggest chain is the movie chain. That is
probably the one you want to rip. Press next.
5) Let the program work for a while
6) On this step, you can set cropping and stuff, I just press Next here
7) Choose Auto Detect, then, press next!
8) Here is the important part! Since I have a powerful Tungsten T3
with 480x320 display, I do like this:
1) File Size, Choose a file size, so that you can choose an output
video size near 480x320 (depends of the resolution of the dvd,
the lengt of the dvd, and so on). Try to get a compression ratio
of 200:1 or more, this should work well on your palm.
2) Audio data rate - I go for 32 Kbits/sec,
this REALLY sounds good when you use earphones
3) Press Next!
9) The last part!
1) Choose XviD, and press "Auto Add..."
2) Press "Add..." under Audio encodings, choose wich audio track to rip
3) Press Next
10) Sit back and wait, or sleep, or do something completly else! This will take a couple of hours.
11) Youre done! move the movie to your SD-card and enjoy!

there is a small simple application to encode divx called pocketdivxencoder, but it has no support for b-frames yet (whcih mmplayer takes *great* benefits on):
http://divx.ppccool.com/
as for encoding videos with virtualdub, you can read the guides in mmplayer's forum:
http://mmplayer.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=f106626841d5152a6c41b72d3bd1c827
z71 and T|E has similar specs so you can use its guides as well, maybe bump it a little higher, but since lightwave just came out (overclocking utility) for omap support, u can do even better and higher bitrate encodings on these devices.

I've spent hours working with many freeware programs and none of them worked as quickly and easily as PocketDVD. I hope you all have better luck than me...PocketDVD is prohibitively expensive as far as palm applications are priced [$32!]

Don't mean to sound repetitive, but check out my above post. This freeware application is a one step process and makes conversion really simple. I own a T3 and followed the guide above and it worked perfectly. The only thing I found on the T3 is the Player does'nt seem to like when you pick a 320 by 480 file size, so I choose a 160 by 240 file size and then tell MMplayer to "best fit" the video. This gives me full screen video and it looks great. The link again is http://fairuse.free.fr/lang_en/index.html The site has screen shots of the program in use, check it out : )
