Hi,

I recently bought my first SD card. I bought a Lexar 128 MB card (on sale for CAD$89.99) after hearing from many that Lexar had a worthwhile product, and frequently was using the Panasonic product. I'm trying to figure out whether I bought a good card for the money.

I'd like to check the card's speed using VFSMark. However, wherever I've downloaded VFSMark 1.1, it's turned out that I'm actually downloading VFSMark 1.0. Am I missing something? Where is it possible to get VFSMark 1.1?

It seems to me that this application was last updated late in 2001. This is a fairly elderly application to be using on the latest generation PDAs. Why is this program the reference standard? Are there alternatives?

One side question: I'm told that I should look at Card Info to determine who actually made my card. This is what I see:

======================

Application Directory:
9 items, 644.4 KB

113.4 MB Used
7.7 MB Free of 121.1 MB

Unknown
Unknown
Secure Digital Card
Device Id: Unknown_4000DC4B000...

=======================

What's with all the Unknowns?

I also noticed on the SD card's packaging that it was made in Taiwan. Is it true that the better cards are made in Japan?

Should this concern me?

Thanks,

Mike

If you got it from PalmGear, I believe that's the one that folks use, It's not even listed on the authors website that I can find...

I have a Lexar card and it says Panasonic in the info so I presume yours is not a Panasonic card (since it says "Unknown").

To find VFSMark, go to PalmGear (www.palmgear.com) and type in "VFSMark" into the search box.

VFSMark is available from FreeWarePalm.com and PalmGear (ID #34400). Both sites list it as v1.1, but the Palm Launcher/Info says it's v1.0. Another poster says the source code included with the file lists a later revision number. The ONLY difference I can find between this version (installed on my T3) and the version on my Visor Prism (installed 10/31/01) is this supposed newer version is 38 bytes larger. I find a brief mention of VFSMark on the Kopsis Engineering web site, but no place to download it there.

It's old, but no one has written a newer utility. The Kopsis software was all well-written and revised as needed, so I'd say "no problem." The source code is included, so maybe an experienced programmer can study it and see if anything about the program needs updated.

The trick to VFS Mark, the more times you run it, the faster it gets. :)

You will hit a max, but on my Panisonic 512 card, I can run it 5 times, an the fifth time will be the fastest on my T3, everytime.

I would love to see one that is more consistant, but remain free so it's a good valid benchmark everyone is willing to try.

The version at PalmGear is 1.1 according to the makefile included with the source code. The docs didn't change after 1.0 and the About page doesn't list a version.
