I just got an NZ from Circuit City last night. My impressions:
Upon taking the NZ out of the box, I was surprised by its very good looks and solid construction. I don't know what it is about it, but Sony really made it look as expensive as it is. Very tastefully done; the black and silver theme is very impressive. As MAJI said in a previous thread, this thing looks 'serious.' Sitting on the cradle, it looks very 'executive.' Without even powering it up, I was already comforted by the fact that I made an excellent purchase.
Even the packaging, with the extra manuals and advertisements, seemed designed to cater to the more opulent CLIE user.
While it there is no way around the fact that the NZ90 is physically big, the size seems very much acceptable to me because, in person, you can really see that this thing is crammed with features. The large screen, the camera w/ flash, the removeable battery, and everything else seem to legitimize the size. 'Bricks' are usually ugly and inefficiently designed, and the NZ90 is neither.
I noticed the stylus silo -- I have decided that I will never take it out :p I'll just get that stylus with the orange tip (PDAPanache?), and keep it with me. I already do that with my NX, anyway.
The cradle system, while far from perfect, is not as bad as advertised. The cradle itself is designed well, and, despite all of the negativity, I think the Hotsync cover on the NZ90 itself is adequate. Getting the NZ90 onto the cradle will always be a two-handed affair, but it's not difficult at all.
The NZ90's screen is bright. I mean BRIGHT. I still have my NX70V, and, upon comparison, I can report that the jump is significant. Then I noticed that the slider was at 50% :D Bottom line: The NZ90 has bar none the best screen of any PDA.
The feel of the stylus on the screen has definitely been improved, as well. The NX seemed to have an air-filled membrane between the screen and the digitizer underneath (although this was not really noticeable until now), and it seems to have been eliminated from the NZ. EXCELLENT feel -- it's these little touches that make me feel totally satisfied with my NZ purchase.
I have only used the camera briefly, and my initial impressions are VERY, VERY positive. The new camera application looks very capable, as well.
As stated above, I am extremely happy with my purchase, and am more impressed with it than I expected. Great job, Sony!
PS: 0 battery cycles upon first startup.
