I have just purchased the WIFI card for my NX70v and a PCI wireless 802.11b adapter by netgear (MA311). I have no other wireless devices. I hope to be able to : Hotsync wirelessly, Browse the web, and maybe even check my mail (hotmail). but I don't even know where to start! I'm lost in a world of subnet masks and SSIP's HELP!!! I had hoped to connect to my computer in Ad-Hoc mode, and connect to the internet through the computer, but I haven't even been able to hotsync yet. web surfing is a dream right now. Can someone please help me configure my devices to at least get them communicating? I run windows 98se, a HP pavillion 8275 (pentium 2, 300 mhz, 98 mbytes of ram.....) and a good old fashioned dial up internet connection. is it even possible for a MA311 to communicate with WL100? the documentation seems to make no accomadation for people who don't have an entire LAN in place and DSL or CABLE. what do I need to know, what don't I need to know. Please, have compassion on a fish out of water.

Well, I can only help so much. I managed to get Internet access in adhoc mode with my Win2k computer cuz it has Internet Connection Sharing. Without that (not there in win98) I think you'd have to buy some software that does the same thing (I know it exists specifically for dial-up connections).
Once that's in place, see the following config info as a starting point:
desktop:
1)Internet connection configured to allow the Wi-FI card to share Internet access
2)Wi-Fi card set to Adhoc w/ a static IP
CLIE: Wi-FI card with the following network settings:
SSID: Any
WEP: None
ConnectMode: Adhoc
ch: 5 (whatever matches the one in your desktop)
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (the wi-fi card in the dekstop)
DNS: <real DNS server IPs>
PowerSaveMode: Disabled

I'd be happy just to hotsync right about now. I went to http://www.otakunozoku.com/wifihotsync/ which has a tutorial on how to set up the hotsync stuff. after follwing his directions, I will admit something has gotten better, instead of my computer just sitting there anytime I try to connect, I now get an error window that says " The system has detected a conflict for IP adress 169.254.55.209 with the system having the hardware adress 00:02:B3:C3:DD:93". hey at least it does something! that gives me a little hope. I ran the program "winipcfg" from the "RUN" window and obtained my WIRELESS cards IP and SUBNET MASK. I put those numbers into my clie, I configured my NETGEAR card to be in ad-hoc mode on the same channel as my clie, I disabled power save, and named the PRIMARY PC "!!", disabled WEP, and have enabled NETWORK hotsync on my computer for my clie. what am I missing? is there something special I need to do in the windows control panel "network"? how do I configure my computer for TCP/IP? should I be in microsft family login mode? or something different? sigh. so many questions. does this help anyone identifiy my trouble?
thanks in advance. your input really is helping me.

It sounds like the same IP address (169.254.55.209) is trying to be assigned to two network/wireless cards: either the one in your desktop or the one in your CLIE. To find out which is causing the problem, you need to identify the card with the specified MAC address (00:02:B3:C3D:93). On the bottom of the back of the CLIE is the MAC address of the card. See if it matches the one your computer is complaining about. Note that there will be no colons (":") in the address written on the back of the card.
Once you've found the culprit, you need to find a way to resolve the conflict, most likely by assigning a static/hard-coded IP address to the CLIE card (you can use 198.168.0.2 if you want)

the number displayed by the computer in the dialog box IS the number on the back of my WL100 card. so let me see if I understand you correctly. I need to assign a DIFFERENT IP number to my Clie's wireless card in the prefs? different from the one specified by my computer for my PCI wireless card? what about the subnet mask? or DNS #? do I even need to have these? (currently I don't have any DNS #'s, and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0) what is the purpose of these numbers? what does an IP adress , a subnet mask, a DNS do? I figure that this whole setup is going to be very picky, and if I'm off by even a single number, the whole thing won't work. OH! and another thing, when I specify any IP adress in the clie prefs, it takes the card no time to "connect" but I wonder if it's even communicating because I was able to switch my computer COMPLETELY off and the clie still managed to "connect". I am very confused.

OK, heres an update. Win 98SE has internet sharing, and when enabled provides an IP for my wireless card (desktop). Changing the settings on my clie to match the IP and the subnet mask only, and specifying the same IP and subnet mask on my desktop in hotsync setup, And inputting the correct IP and subnet mask into the clie primary pc setup, AND using the name "!!" for the primary PC (very important) in the clie ALLOWS ME TO HOTSYNC!!!! yeah! so for anyone out there who DOES NOT have an "acsess point" and a fully established LAN, only a lone wireless card and a CLIE, there is hope. now If i could only browse the internet. anyone out there familiar with the settings that get that to work? I have internet sharing enabled, and the wireless card is selected as the acsess point to the home network, (the dial up adapter is selected as the connection to the internet) I can hotsync so I know my wireless comm. is working, but when I try to browse the web using netfront, it doesn't seem to be going through the computer to the 'net. any suggestions?

Do you have a firewall on your PC?

Who is your ISP? If it's AOL, it could be a problem.
The DNS addresses come from your ISP.
You do need some ICS software, I'll have to search back as I am running Windows XP and using a wireless LAN with cable modem.

well, thank you all for replying to my frantic posts. but as I write to you now, (on my clie = ) my problems have been fixed. by entering the ip adress assigned to my card into my dns and the other thing....(drawing a complete blank here).... so for all you out there who dont know if youll be able to share an internet connection through a dial up and a wireless adapter with no acsess point, IT CAN BE DONE!!!!!!
