View Full Version : Good news and possibly bad news re: Jackflash/sprat for OS5

Hi,
I've been exchanging e-mails with Brad from Brayder.
The good news is that Jackflash for OS5 will be released very shortly (next week?) - I'm not sure if it's in its final form or if it will be a public beta... The NX70v should have over 4 megs of available flash memory that can be used by Jackflash.
The bad news is that Brayder now believes that an OS5 version of Jacksprat for the Clies may not be possible due to limitations in the OS. They are still investigating whether they can get around these limitations, but Brayder's current word is that it just may not be possible.
FYI...

Jacksprat removes your apps in ROM
Jackflash transfers your apps to/from your RAM and ROM

=(
I would LOVE to delete programs I DON'T ever use.
Are upgrades free?

So couldn't you just move apps from ROM to RAM with jackflash and then use something like mcfile to delete them? why would you even need jacksplat?

Becoz the built in apps are actually in the non flashable ROM. So Jacksprat is needed in this sense. Jackflash actually releases the non flashable ROM and transfer apps to the now flashable ROM .

ROM can sometimes be annoying, like on Deep Space Nine.

Why? They're not taking up space that you could use, and you can just put them into a hidden category.

Well, if you had Jackflash, they ARE taking up space you could use for something else.

He was only talking about wanting to be able to delete apps he didnt use in rom.

Right. I'm not sure if you know how these apps work, but I've used them both on my older Clies, so here's a quick rundown.
Jacksprat will allow you to delete apps from ROM. These will end up being apps you never use or ones that you have replacements for. However, this is useless unless you have Jackflash.
Jackflash allows you to use the ROM space that's not being used. The amount changes by devices, some have more, some have less. If you've used Jacksprat, then this amount will be more.
So, if you have both apps, you can delete ROM apps you don't use and use this space for apps that you do use.

I own JackFlash and had it on my previous organizer (N710). Does anyone know if the release for OS5 will be a free upgrade or will it cost $??

To be more acurate:
1) JackFlash lets you move files back and from the part of the FlashROM that is not occupied by the OS in FlashROM.
2) JackSprat lets you remove files from the OS part of the FlashROM image, thus decreasing the size of the ROM image, and increasing the FlashROM space that is useable by JackSprat.

I read someplace that it would be a paid upgrade since they had to rewrite the code for OS5. Which kinda sucks cause it's one of those apps you buy once and never really need to upgrade unless you upgrade your device. But I'm definitely upgrading my version.

I've used both on previous units also.
But if Brayder has jackflash working in house, why don't they release it for sale/upgrade so we can at least use the rom that is available(however much that is)? You can still use jackfash without jacksprat.

I just recently purchased a NR70V/U and would like to buy the NX70. I own both JackSprat and JackFlash and have had very good success. The only thing that is stopping me from upgrading is the fact that the OS5 version is not out yet. I really want to get the NX70, but if neither of the two programs are available, then I think I will just have to stay with the NR70V/U until somthing else happens. Just trying to find out what is new and why is it that the NX70 with OS5 only gives you 11MB for use. What is up with that?
Thanks I will get off of my soap box now. :)
