I'm rather new at playing mp3's on my T3. I've found a place (dbPower AMP) to use to encode my music files to mp3's to play on my TC.
However, when I encode them they are still huge files. Where can I go to learn more about encoding music files so that they are smaller files?
Thanks for any help.

You could try Ogg Vorbis format, it's produces smaller files than MP3 encoding and I believe dbPowerAmp will transcode MP3 to Ogg
You can learn about Ogg at www.vorbis.com
Pocket-tunes supports that format as does Aeroplayer (I think)

You can also try a different encoding program. I use cdex with no problems which you can get at the following url: http://www.cdex.n3.net/

Use CDex and encode them as 128Kbps MP3s. That will give you good sound and a decent file size of roughly 1MB per minute of music.

I also use CDex, and encode to 48-56 kbps with very good quality (it is of course worse than 128 but not really noticeable, and the music experience is still very pleasurable) provided the quality of encoding is the highest (0). It takes longer but I can fit two Operas in one 128 Mb SD card... (4 hours of music).
Convert one file with different sampling settings and test the results. You'll decided based on your own appreciation.
I am using both AeroPlayer and PocketTunes (two shareware MP3 players, much better than the supplied RealOne): make sure you don't enable volume overdrive or volume boost, it distorts sound greatly, even at the lowest setting, but especially in Pocket Tunes.

Just to note that you can also use iTunes to encode/rip MP3 and it has a variety of options in terms of bitrates/quality etc

RealPlayer 10 has an option to resample MP3s at a lower bitrate as you transfer them.

Thanks for all the info. I'll give it a try. I had a six minute song that was 6mb after I converted it. I assumed it would be smaller.

mp3's are about "a meg a minute", if you want decent quality. I don't go lower than 192k

Dunno if you have looked at this one, Musicmatch Jukebox is good... There are loads of recording options. Good for converting just about any CD to mp3.

I agree, try this format. I usually use the free Quintessential Player (http://www.quinnware.com/) on my PC.

Errrm, will Palm Apps play Ogg files? If not then this is really a bit usless for me... I like pTunes too - same question...

Actually ptunes started as an Ogg player, if you check out the website they have an excellent FAQ page, with links to stuff for Ogg creation etc, I used to do the ogg, but am hooked on iTunes and it works great for my iPod and ptunes ( with an excellent itunes skin by Lance!!)
