I debated and debated between Pocket PC and Palm and finally decided to go with the Palm (as a mac user it should have been a no brainer). I went for a higher quality one so I got the Tungsten T3.

Now all I need to do is find a good financial calculator program and figure out how to get excel spreadsheets over and I will be set.

If anyone has an good advice (must have apps or tips and tricks) for a new user I would really appreciated. I will be reading up but it would be nice to get a good head start.

Welcome to the Palm community, Kurto. Of course, most people here would applaud your choice of PDA OS's!

There's a huge wealth of info here and at the other Palm sites (I frequent brighthand.com and palminfocenter.com) waiting to be plumbed. Remember, the Search button is your friend!

For calculators, do you prefer algebraic entry (ptuii) or RPN (yay!)? If the latter, check out KK-12C from kktechnologies.com. It is a pretty faithful reproduction of the HP-12C, one of the most popular and long running calculators of all time, let alone financial calculators.

Well, your choice of Palm OS is a clear sign of your higher intelligence. ;) :p

That said, good choice with the T3. It is a fine PDA, I would have one myself if I hadn't gotten the TC because I was tired of waiting.

Welcome and don't forget to check out the eBooks. :D

Great financial calculator is powerOne Financial. I've used it (and its predecessors) for several years now & been quite happy with it.

Welcome to the T3 world :D

Other software you might find helpful would be Mobile Systems software and Agendus v7.05. If you travel a lot take a look at WorldMate Pro v3.1. For photos I like AcidImage. MP3 take a look at Aero Player. Kinoma 2 for movies. ZLauncher to spice up the UI. MS Dict is a great dictionary. Backup Man for backups. Some of the best looking games are from Megasoft2000 and Handmark. Be sure to check on the date of your ROM. There were big problems with the T3 messing up sd cards when a back up was performed. You may want to contact Palm customer service to find out if your T3 has the update, if not head over to the support page.

the excel spreadsheets are easy, just copy them onto a memory card, the T3 comes with Documents to Go, so you should be able to use that to read your ms office files in their native form from the memory card.

No need to call Palm for this. Just open a new memo, enter the short cut symbol (cursive L) followed by .9 (that's period and the number 9). If the resulting date is 10/31/03, you're fine. If not, get the ROM update.

I use Parens version 1.5 as a calculator. It a great application. I also use D2G for both word and excel files. It works great for construction on the go or updating. One application you may want to look into is Card Export. It allows the SD card in your T3 to be read as another drive by your PC. Then from there its just click and drag for file to add to your SD card. You can also look for BackupBuddy VFS and down load it free. It will back up your T3 contents (every thing even applications and data that do not come with the T3) to your SD card for safe keeping. I rename my backup to include the weeks Friday date using McFile and then copy that folder to my PC for safe keeping.
