Determining what format a .pdb file is

You can open .pdb or .prc files with a text editor like Wordpad and you will see, near the beginning of the file, the Type and Creator codes of the file. For example, if the .pdb or .prc file contains the text "ToGoToGo" near the start of the file, it's an iSilo file. You can also use Windows Find File to search for PDA files of a specific creator or type. For example, if you want to find all the iSilo documents on your PC, go to Start->Find->Files or Folders and search for files containing the text string 'ToGoToGo'. (This great tip was provided by Javier Bonet and Mark Worthington). I've compiled a short list of Type/Creator codes for some PalmOS document formats found here at MemoWare, as follows:

TEXt REAd = DOC

DB99 DBOS = DB (Database program)

vIMG View = FireViewer/ImageViewer

PmDB PmDB = HanDBase

Info INDB = InfoView

ToGo ToGo = iSilo

SDoc SilX = iSilo 3 (newer version of iSilo)

JbDb  JBas = JFile

JfDb JFil = JFile Pro

DATA LSdb = LIST

Mdb1 Mdb1 = MobileDB

Data Plkr = Plucker

Data  Sprd = QuickSheet

TEXt TlDc = TealDoc

Info TlIf = TealInfo

Data TlMl = TealMeal

Data TlPt = TealPaint

data TDBP = ThinkDB

Tdat Tide = Tides

ToRa TRPW = TomeRaider

BDOC WrdS = WordSmith

...I was wondering why I couldn't read some files with just one reader. So you are saying that I have to have a dozen or so readers in my collection? I haven't gotten too deep into the Reader thing yet...

..but THANX for clearing a lot of it up!

By definition, a "hobby" of collecting eBook Readers isn't considered a true addiction until it numbers over a dozen or so. Under 12 is just a "hobby" and less than 3 can be justification for banishment from the club. :-)

Seriously though, it should be noted that some Readers have proprietary formats but still use the "general" PalmDOC values of TEXt / REAd. These include MobiPocket Reader. A MobiPocket specific PRC file will open in Palm/Peanut Reader as if it was a generic DOC but the MobiPocket-specific formatting tags will display making the document unreadable by any practical definition.

Also, many of the eBook readers that have their own T/C codes for their prorietary formats will also open and properly display "generic" PalmDOC's tagged TEXt/REAd.

If you have MobiPocket, Palm/Peanut Reader, iSilo, and TomeRaider you will be able to read a good 95% of the eBooks out there. I get along fine with just MobiPocket, Palm Reader, and Picsel Viewer (for generic PDF among other things). Most eBook sites (http://www.memoware.com , http://www.blackmask.com , ...) will post in several formats.

Need some clarification on this matter pl. If a file can be opened with multiple readers will that file also be multiplied in the handheld by the number of those readers with which it can be accessed?

If you're looking for a source of free ebooks, check out http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/ebooks/ (Palm Reader) or Project Gutenberg (txt and pdf only).
By the way, have anybody seen "The Stand" by Stephen King in the form of an ebook?
