does the purple sony memory stick work for putting mp3's on it, or do you have to buy the white ones.

the purple sticks are for MP3's
the white MagicGate sticks are for MP3's and ATRAC3's.

ATRAC3 audio files utilizes the MagicGate copyright protection technology and allows compression of audio file without significant loss of quality. However, you need to use the SonicStage software to transfer ATRAC3 files to your CLIE.

Otherwise, you could just use the regular purple ones for dragging and dropping MP3's by using MS Import.

Yep. The only difference is the stuff described in my previous post and the price. I suggest you buy a Lexar memory stick: slightly cheaper yet the same functionality as a regular purple Sony MS.
