View Full Version : Steady Metronome for T3

I've tried 2 different softwares that have metronomes on my T3: M-Gadgets and Metronome (freeware). Both of them are incapable of keeping an absolutely rock solid beat. There are constantly tiny time hiccups that make it unuseable.

It's entirely possible that the T3 hardware design makes absolutely precise triggering of events an impossible task. Are these metronome programs rock steady on older model Palms?

One solution could be to generate one or more wav files (for down and up beats), concatenate them and play them back as an audio loop or generate an "x" minute sound file that would then just play back: at least a sound file (mp3, wav) seems to play back just fine so this would be a solution. But it would be hard to adjust timing quickly in real time which is what I use it for (tempo analysis or discovery).

It would be really useful to me to have a pro-quality metronome on the the T3. If anyone knows of one that works please do let me know.

I do know of a program called DaCapo (http://palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=DF62F8E5-B4B0-498D-86C1C6C176E1EEE2&prodID=28056). It works fine on my TT, though with the T3 and it's faster processor, it may not be the same for your device. It's shareware, but the only restriction seems to be a pop-up window whenever you start the program. Perhaps you should give it a try.

FiftyCycle (http://www.fiftycycle.com/)'s PerfectPitch makes the pretty hefty claim that it's the only Palm OS metronome that won't lose a beat, and I know that, when using one, that's pretty danged important.

It ain't free, but try out the demo and see.

While I haven't found it to drop a beat, I do find the starting sometimes inconsistent.

Most of the time, I tap the screen to start, and all's well.

Sometimes, it double-starts on the 4 (in a 4/4 signature) before kicking in to the 1 (faster than a full count).

But, if that isn't a problem, once it's going, I haven't had anything stop it but the 3 minute auto-off.

And yes, many other metronomes I've tried (I can't say I've tried DeCapo) have indeed skipped or dropped their count.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions. DaCapo definitely suffers of the time accuracy as much if not more as the previous ones I'd tried.

Of all of them, Perfect Beat is the closest one but even it can't seem to handle higher tempos perfectly, though it is a lot better than any the others. I've sent a mail to the author asking whether the T3's been tested.
