View Full Version : Palm Desktop Question/Installation CD
I just upgraded from a malfunctioning T/E to a T/3. I uninstalled (using cleansweep) the Desktop from the T/E and then tried to install the desktop from the T/3 CD. Installation won't progress - says there is already a newer version of desktop installed. I've emailed palmone - the support area of the website says not to use anything else except the version that comes with the T/3. I haven't hotsynced yet. What do I do now? Am I worried about nothing? Thanks for anwering what is probably a stupid question.

Just download the latest and greatest version from Palm One's website. It should be compatable with ALL current handhelds.

Um, no. The version of the desktop for the TE/T3 is different - and it is not available on the website. It has support for the different PIM fields.
I'm confused - you said you uninstalled the desktop and then the installation wouldn't take? How could it see a newer installation if you uninstalled it? Do you have a version of the desktop still on your computer? If it is from the TE, then you are fine.
Guess I wasn't very clear. I returned the T/E and all cables, accessories, etc. including the install disk to the store on Sunday and exchanged it for a T/3. Charged that all night, and then looked at the palmone support site - I figured the desktop would be the same or that the T/3 would just install whatever else I needed on top of the existing palm desktop. Saw the warning about "use the disk that came with the device" so I used Norton's CleanSweep to remove what ever palm stuff I could (also trying to clean up some remains of previous programs that I didn't like). Then I tried to install the desktop using the T/3 disk, but it would stop and give me a message that another newer version was detected. BUT, the desktop wasn't functional and since I no longer had the T/E CD I couldn't restore parts that were missing.
Emailed palmone, got some stock replies, tried to use add/remove to get rid of the vestiges of the T/E desktop, but evidently the uninstall manager is on the CD, so that was out.
I ended up calling Staples - they had already packaged the T/E for return but a sympathetic clerk went through their shipping boxes and dug out the T/E CD for me. I went and picked it up, fixed the files, and hotsyncd from there. Went to palmone and downloaded the T/3 fixes and now all is right with my T/3. This was much easier than searching out all the palm files in the windows registry and editing them!
