View Full Version : Emergency: T3 won't stay off and, now, won't turn off

After two months of excellent service, my T3 this morning presented me with an emergency, which persists (and, indeed, has worsened):

On seeing that my battery was surprisingly low, I discovered that although I could turn the T3 off, it would not stay off; instead, it would turn itself on after 10 seconds. This happened time and again.

I called Palm Tech Support, and after having me do a soft reset with no success, the person promptly suggested that I perform a hard reset. I resisted, saying I would prefer to do that only as a last resort. He then had me do various things -- set auto power off to 30 seconds, assign and then unassign a password -- all to no avail. He then returned to the hard reset recommendation. I told him that I would prefer first to go the "forum" route and if no solution presented itself, I would do the hard reset.

(I then checked to see if Bluetooth had inadvertently been turned on. It was, I turned it off, but STILL the T3 persisted in powering back on after I turned it off.)

After checking this forum and Brighthand's, I found one instance where, in November, someone reported a similar problem and received a recommendation to do a hard reset:

http://discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds/showthread.php?threadid=48574&highlight=turn+and+on

I checked a separate item referenced in that exchange, which underscored the notion of performing a hard reset as a last resort. This item, found at

http://discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds/showthread.php?s=&threadid=989

pointed out the existence of a "double-soft reset" (performing a soft reset, but pressing the reset button twice in quick succession).

Having tried that, I am horrified to report that now my T3 WON'T TURN OFF AT ALL. It is "frozen" with the "Palm Powered" logo on the screen.

If anyone has any constructive recommendations on this suddenly grim New Year's Day, I would very much welcome them. Many thanks in advance -- and a Happy New Year in any event to all.

Does this condition now persist i.e. have you done another soft reset? and still just get the Palm Logo...

Have you tried the "warm reset", holding the up button down whilst doing a pin in the back reset?

Matrix 42,

I have, indeed, tried both a soft rest AND a warm reset. Neither works -- that is, the Palm logo remains, and the unit is essentially "frozen". If I could access the unit, I would turn off the imminent birthday reminders that evidently cause, at year's end, the original problem. But as I say, the unit is frozen completely. If you have any ideas other than a hard reset itself, I would welcome them. Thanks, in any event, for your suggestions.

Let the battery drain completely. Charge it for a few minutes. It'll unfreeze, but you'll get your hard reset that you've been dreading.

You really don't have to fear a hard reset. Just make sure you HotSync or backup to the card first. After you hard reset, you'll be able to reinstall everything. I know it's too late to do that now, but keep it in mind for future reference.

That happened to me too-- the freeze thing, had to do a hard reset in the end.
And I realized in the end (after all my troubles) that it was the birthday alarm that was the cause of all my problems, which I posted over at brighthand.

Many thanks to those who graciously reached out and helped at a most vexing time: originally,in diagnosing the problem (noting an apparent OS 5 flaw that can't deal well with early January birthday reminders at year's end) and then in solving it (suggesting the unchecking of January birthday reminders). I did the latter -- after performing a hard reset because my unit had frozen -- and my T3 now performs as it should, turning on and off when it should.

I won't say it was Y2K lite, but it is presumably more than coincidence that quite a few of us (so I learned from several forums) first experienced the problem on the morning of January 1st -- and then simultaneously solved the problem by deleting January birthday reminders.

Thanks again, and, again, Happy New Year to all.

Just do it like that:
Delet all notifications of you adressbook entries in which a birthday is placed a week after newyear.
It seems to me, that the TT3 isn't able to notify a birthday over a year-change. So it turnes on every 10 seconds to run its notify-programm but fails.

Happy new year,

It's me again - sorry for disturbing you twice ;-)
As I could see, jn46 already solved the problem.
I just found it out myself and wanted to let you know without seeing jn46's post.
Sorry for that - yoysoft

You're not "disturbing" anyone, Yoysoft. We're all in this together and all pulling toward a common end. Good luck.
