Is there a difference between Secure Digital and MultiMedia cards? If so what is it.

Check out these links:

1. http://www.sdcard.org/
2. SD is an acronym for Secure Digital, a type of memory card used by Pocket PCs and many other handheld devices including other PDAs, MP3 music players, and digital cameras.

MMC is an acronym for MultiMedia Card, a type of memory card that is slightly smaller in physical size than SD. It is also used by a range of devices.

Can my gizmo with an SD slot use MMC memory cards?

From what I have read, yes, I believe so. Most, if not all, SD slots can also use the slightly smaller MMC cards as well as the SD cards. So, SD and MMC both use the same slot. If you can use one, you are also able to use the other, which is why you have to decide: which one should I get?

What is the difference between MMC and SD?

I am going to summarize the information I found at http://www.geocities.com/romidar/mmcvssd.htm in the following few sentences.

Speed: SD cards are faster than MMC cards. The actual speed that you'll get depends on the device you're using the card in. The advertised speed for each individual card makes little difference.

Durability: The SD cards are probably more durable due to thicker casing and design changes.

Write-protection: Only SD cards have a small switch on the side of them that allows for write-protection, much like floppy disks. This isn't a big deal but might be useful to some people.

Copyright Protection: SD cards are more secure but this isn't something that makes the card better for the average consumer.

So which is better?

The conclusion that most people come to is that MMC is better for most people due mostly to the lower cost. It is also slightly smaller in size.

SD is probably technologically better but is more expensive.
