View Full Version : Tungsten T3 staying on and draining battery

Since yesterday I've found that my T3 has not always been switching off after one minute of inactivity. This afternoon it must have stayed on for a couple of hours, judging by the BatteryGraph log. I put it away without switching it off, because the power button is so awkward to use. When I went to use it later in the afternoon I found it was down to 20%.
It may just be a coincidence, but the day before yesterday I installed the T3Updater. Could this problem be linked to the ROM upgrade? I never had the problem before. Has anyone else noticed this?

No, no problem here and I did the update over two weeks ago. Now that doesn't preclude the fact that something in memory has become corrupted after you restored it. Stuff happens!:D

Is your Bluetooth on?
Here's a solution. You can set it up so that one long stroke from the bottom of your screen to the top will shut off and lock it immediately. Go to Prefs > in the Personal section go to Buttons > click on the More button > on the drop down list select Turn Off and Lock, then click OK. Works great.. It's amazing what you find when you dig around a little.. ;)

I replaced G2 with G1.
Long strokes don't seem to work for me now.

I had also run into this problem. I am using Bluetooth Toggle Pro 2.1 and I have verified that BTToggle was properly working and ensuring that Bluetooth was off when it should have been (that included the PDA going to sleep). Keeping that in mind, I don't think Bluetooth was the culprit. From what I have deduced from looking into this issue, the TT3 uses advanced screen technology that no other PDA (up to this point) is utilizing. Screen dimming and the system sleep options are handled a bit differently. While the PDA appeared to be off at times, in reality it was still on and the screen had simply been shut down. This seemed to be happening most often if I turned the PDA off after a hotsync and then removed the PDA from the cradle. Long story short, I ran across this wonderful utility called HandyAid (I am not affiliated with them) on Palmgear. I think the latest version is still 1.5. This utility addresses all of the little quirks and differences of the TT3 and is the best $11.95 I have recently spent. Since installing HandyAid, my PDA has never not shutdown properly. It has never turned on when I did not want it on and it has never stayed on after a "software-on" call unless I was the one that performed that call (slider on/off). If you are a TT3 owner, you need this utility. I realize I am sounding like a commercial for the product but it is just my enthusiasm for it.

I seem to have the same draining battery problem. I presumed it was something to do with Datbook5 switching on the T3 at midnight and then the device not turnign off afterwards but not sure. Irratting though - I have had to do a restore twice because of this.
I have not installed the T3updater but what is wierd is that this started happening around the time that the update was made available.
Finally a question: What are you using to keep a log of the battery (the only thing I can see is a Battery app what was released in 2001 and therefore not likely to be compatible with the T3).
Thanks

Just wanted to second AnthonyM's praise of HandyAid. It is really great.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I definitely haven't got Bluetooth on, so it's not that. I'll investigate HandyAid, but in the meantime I seem to have solved the problem (fingers crossed!):) I changed the power off time in Preferences from 1 minute to 30s and it seemed to work OK, I've now changed it to 2 minutes and it still works fine. Maybe the upgrade messed it up temporarily (let's hope so, anyway).
The battery log that I use is BatteryGraph, which works fine on the T3 and is free - get it from here (http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/batterygraph.shtml) . Incidentally, I see there's an update available, I'll have to try it. One of the things that BatteryGraph really brings home is the discrepancy between the battery percentage and the actual charge left in the battery - one is shown by a red line, the other by a black line, and they're rarely in the same place. The other thing is that the T3 battery shoots up and down in a rather bizarre fashion. Mind you, the battery behaviour of my digital camera and my iPod is pretty strange too.

I had the same problem and discovered what was happening. Install the security patch from palmone for the T3, tell it to encrypt your calendar when locked, put an alarm using the DateBk5 and lock your handheld. You will get a reset screen which will drain all your battery if don't reset your palm before that.

Me again... You can save some headaches like the one I had by installing this freeware, named Crash. It will reset your palm after some time stuck in a reset screen. Worked fine with my T3 and this DateBk5 issue.
