View Full Version : Migrating from Clie to Tungsten T3
I've tried to check for threads on this and only really found the reference to the Palm web site for upgrading (unless my search words are not very good)
I'll be upgrading from T625C to T3 hence the question:
As the Clie directory is under program files\sony handheld is it best to make a backup of the "username" folder (and subfolders), un-install the Clie software, install the Palm OS software then copy the "username" folder back under the Program Files\Palm folder, then continue to follow the steps on the PalmOne web site (i.e. rename the backup folder etc).
The reason for checking is that I was wondering if the Palm hotsync conduit would be totally clean if I didn't uninstall the Sony stuff.
I also want to keep all my PIM databases in the transition.
Thanks.

On thing to watch for is that in any major update (even within a family, but especially when going from say OS4 Sony to OS5 Palm) the OS preferences may have changed formats.. so when you restore your old data, it is best to do so "by choice" -- don't just bring back *everything*,. bring back the 90% that are apps, app data thqt belongs to those apps, etc. If you have no idea what some file is, leave it behind.. you can always send it up later from your backup of the user directory.
Too often I've seen peopel restore everything, and thenonce in awhile see random crashes and some apps behaving weird, etc, where just removing an old OS4 file from an OS5 unit cleans it all up :)

I personally switched from a Nx80v to a T3.
I backed up the entire Sony folder, and moved it into a test folder.
I then un-installed the Sony software, and installed a fresh copy of Palm desktop into a partitioned area on my hardrive, called Office (where I keep all my office apps).
Upon completing I created my old user name as a new user, and went through 1 sync with the T3 to set up everything that the first sync does.
After that I imported my Datebook entries, Addressbook, ToDo's, Memopad entries and synch'ed again.
Once I confirmed that all went well, I started to re-install 1 by 1 each app and its required databases.
I searched the authors web site to see if it was compatible as well to see if there was a new updates available for the OS5 /T3.
Doing this will save you from having to hard reset or remove the app's that may not be compatible with the T3 as well as the Sony updates that you may have installed a long time ago and have forgotten.
In addition Sony has special drivers and apps that the T3 will not use and can muck it up...
Like Audio, multi media dll's whatever.
Clean, and fresh is better then easier, and fast.
It will then be clear and clean as to misc. garbage that you dont need cluttering up your PDA...
Hope this helps.
Thanks both for the advice. I definitely think I'll go for the "clean is best" approach.
Appreciated.
