View Full Version : Would you return a yellowish T3?

I am now on my 4th T3 after having to return 3 others for various reasons. My very first T3 had the blueish, crisp white screen, all of the other have had the yellowish, slightly dingy screen.

I know the general answer is if it bothers me return it. But I'm not sure what the statistical breakdown is between the various types of screens people are seeing. I don't want to just keep returning units and getting the same yellow screen, that seems to be the pattern in my area of late.

Its hard for me to remember the first device. Does anyone have two they can actually compare? Are the blueish screens that much whiter and brighter? The pictures on the web sites are really hard to go by.

If this turns out to be a good T3... I'm not sure what to do. I've debated back and forth between just getting a TE and waiting for the T4, TC2, or what what ever. Maybe the screen issues will be addressed by then. The TC, TE, Zire 71, etc. don't seem to have these issues.

Has anyone else struggled with this $ vs. quality debate (getting your moneys worth) type of debate?

Just looking for opinions.

Cheers, NeoMemory

It sounds like you really want/prefer the "blue" screen. What I would do is go back to the store and exchange it, but have them put the new one on the cradle for about 30 min. while you browse at the store, then check out the screen tint before you leave. This way you have a better chance of getting what you want (and you have an excuse to look at all those cool new toys!).

I returned my T3 for various reasons but the creamy colored screen was one of the primary reasons. I visited several stores comparing the screen color with my NX80 and did not find any that had the crisp white background.

Of coarse the battery life was the major reason to step back to the NX80. Battery life is always my first consideration as I use the unit so much in traveling.

I will wait for the next release -or- for Clie to move in the T# direction.

I'm not sure I actually know what you're talking about, but if it's just the color scheme, some do look 'dingier' than others. Does it help at all if you change it?

There apparently are two versions of screens used in the T3. One is by Sharp, the other by Sony. The Sony apparently is the better screen.

I wonder. If you hadn't read about it, would it ever have bothered you at all? I think they are both quality products and one happens to have a lighter tint to it. For example, the battery life thing. i use my T3 constantly and it has never gone below 73%, and when I put it in the cradle, it recharges very quickly. I was expecting to be able to actually watch the battery meter going down from the way people have been whining. Seriously, here we have this remarkable new palm, and people are looking for reasons to fault it. What are you, PPC double agents? :) I'm just joking. try to lighten up, folks...

hmm... I had mine for a week now, and I thought I'd get used to it, but it's very unnerving... I was used to a very bright screen on my NX73, and the yellow tinge+ too high contrast (try to look at the palette in IconManager, you can't distinguish 2 near tints in the dark parts :() of the T3 at 100% brightness looks like my old N700C... My work makes me very touchy about colors (I'm graphic designer)... I was planning to sell my CLIE as soon as I get my T3, and somehow I can't find the motivation, because of that yellow screen. Otherwise, It's near the ideal PDA for me. Maybe there's some sort of hidden setting somewhere -I saw a "brightness" app that's hidden in ROM, dunno how to launch it, or even if I can- I asked PalmOne about the problem, waiting for an answer...

here's the answer from PalmOne :

Dear Mytho,

Thank you very much for your inquiry. I understand that the display
of your Palm(TM) Tungsten(TM) T3 handheld appears to be yellow and dark.

Mytho, the screen of the Palm Tungsten T3 handheld is designed to
generate a pale yellow display. This is adapted with a view to attain
better visibility for the users while using the product. The concept is
derived after a lot of research, development and regular surveys
conducted by the developers team. However, if you are not satisfied
with the way the screen displays, a workaround that we at palmOne, Inc.
would provide is by changing the color theme the Palm handheld is
presently setup to a soothing combination. This should fix the issue.

In order to change the color theme of your Palm Tungsten T3 handheld,
please perform the following steps

1. Power on your Palm handheld.

2. Tap on the Home icon to get to the Mail Application Launcher
screen.

3. Tap on Prefs.

4. From the Personal Prefs, select Color Theme.

5. Select an appropriate Color Theme.

6. Tap on Done.

However, if you continue to find the screen exceptionally dark to the
extent that it is affecting the visibility, then, I request you to get
in touch with the place from where you have purchased the product to get
it exchanged.
-------------------------------

not much help from that corner, except that it seems that the yellow screens are the normal ones, and the bluish ones the failed....

How long does it take for the battery to go down to about 73%?
If I use my unit for about 10 to 15 minutes I am down to around 70%.
It that what you mean by, " i use my T3 constantly"?
Thanks

I'm with one of the posters above..

ie: I don't know if my T|T3 is yellowish or not.. it looks very good to me, better than previous displays (though my T|T2 might've been a tiny bit whiter?)

You've had a previous T|T3 so you're in a unique position.. but for me, whatever I've got I'm happy with, though I've not had another T|T3 to compare to. My T|T3 is brighter than my Zodiac, which is already a bright screen. (Though the Zodiac's screen is somehow nicer in some indistinguishable way..)

So the real question is.. is it good enough for you? I don't think anyone else can make the decision. If it botheres you, try and get another one. If it onyl bothers you relative to the first one.. so what? Its whethor its good enough for you *now*. If not, take it back -- you paid good money, you want to be happy. Dont' setlle for second rate.

But it also depends .. what other issues did youhave? By the sounds of it, you returned the others (3?!) for reasons other than the screen. So if you seem to have a bad lot in your area, maybe kepeing with a good one is a good idea. But I can't imagine there being too many other issues.

But you can get them to open them up; I've been known to go to a store (Futureshop in Canada) and thereaten saying "I can open up a box, check a thing, and return it same 5 minutes, and go to the next box. If you like, I'll go through every box in the store until you return them all to the origiun, or we can proceed like decent people and get me a working thing" (It wasn't PODA related); they followed through.. I went through a few boxes of items to get the one I wanted :) (It wasn't PDA related, but a good similar thing)

I happen to like my T3 screen. It looks white to me. :)

I won accept a T3 or any PDA with a yellowish screen,
