View Full Version : Competition - which XScale CPU powers the T3?
clievideo

Quote from the T3 specs on the palmOne site:
"the Tungsten T3 handheld is powered by our most advanced hardware to date: a 400 MHz Intel® XScale™ processor".
...but which of the different XScale CPU's is it?
...and why does not palmOne say which one it is?
I have read posts from people that are quite certain that the T3 has the PXA255 (same as Tungsten C) and others say they are just as sure that it has the PXA263 ( same as in the CLIE NX73V/NX80V ).
I thought it would be fun to get your opinion on the subject, and I will give away a license of Lightspeed to the one with a correct answer and with the best motivation to why it is that XSCALE CPU / why palmOne wont tell us which it is. :)
So... which one is it? :)
I am positive that the T3 has a PXA255 XScale processor.
PXA Clocker tells me this when I run it.

Thanks for your input br- :)
Well, I am slightly biased, but I dont think you should trust what that app is telling you. It says PXA255 for the NX73V and NX80V aswell, which is incorrect since they both have the PXA263...
So br- is positive it is the PXA255, what do you others think?

I am sure by now that someone must have opened up the case and looked inside:eek:

It's the 255..Why? 'cause I want the free license! :D
Heh well if PXA Clocker incorrectly reports the NX80V then I take back my previous statement!

It definitely sports the PXA255 XScale processor! Intels new release mentioned it in the products that will utilize it, and I have seen it on many different boards including Brighthand. Feel free to PM me that license...thanks. :)

I think you have the best motivation so far ;)

Sofar everyone believes that the T3 sports the PXA255...
Who will be the first one that thinks differently?
The different XSCALE CPU's to choose from are:
PXA255
PXA260
PXA261
PXA262
PXA263

It's the PXA263.
This is the only production version running at 400 MHz.
As to Why it is not posted?
Most likely to enable them to change the processor at a later date if needed without the need to update posted /printed info...and to keep people from returning to upgrade.

This is a very intriguing competition question, not easily answered, but here's my entry:
1. The Processor ID register comes back with a value of 0x69052D06, which means it's either a PXA255 (A0 stepping) or a PXA26x (B1 stepping).
2. Testing reveals the presence of an Audio Synchronous Serial Port (which is present on the PXA26x series but apparently not on the PXA255). This eliminates the PXA255.
3. Getting the value of register MSC0 reveals that the flash memory is using a 32-bit bus, which is only present on the PXA263.
Conclusion: The T3 uses the PXA263 processor with 32MB StrataFlash.
Why? For the same reasons Sony used it with NX73 and NX80 series: space and cost. Combining the CPU core with the flash memory reduces the number of chips needed to complete a device design, making it easier for licensee like PalmOne to make smaller devices, as well as reducing the cost.

There is still some time to enter this mini competition.
The correct answer and the winner (if any) will be announced later today. :)

Well, so much for software investigation... Crackin' this puppy open reveals that n0m0n is indeed correct. The T3 is sportin' a PXA261, stepping B1.
As for why Palm chose to use the PXA261 versus the PXA255, I suppose my original answer still holds. There may be other factors such as Intel trying to dump a bunch of unused PXA261's as most device manufacturers use the higher end PXA263.
Why does Palm choose not to advertise the specific processor? I simply have no real idea. Perhaps it's because they don't want to invite unfair comparisons...

So what are the benefits or drawbacks of the PXA261, step B1 processor, particularly as compared to the PXA255 in the TC?

I think it's the PXA263...as the FCC says so :p
Well...I can't read the pic, but you take a look:
http://www.pocketloft.com/uploads/misc/ellis/TT3%20inside.pdf
If you look close enough, you can slightly see that it says PXA263 (assuming that is the CPU)
The FCC listing (so you believe me that I got it from the FCC):

Yea...I am right...
According to this review:

It is a PXA263, as for one thing, they opened the T|T3 :p.

But if you take a look at the FCC pic, you can just barely see that the CPU says PXA263
