Yeah, if I do it with an active input area, I get:
MemoryMgr.c, Line:3635 NULL handle
when I try to bring it up. Totally weird! Any ideas?

???
Maybe some application is incompatible and getting system down.
Do you have some system apps? Keyboard replacers, button remapers, clipboard extenders? Try to disable them.
If this will not help, you can try next:
Make a full backup (!!!), do a hard-reset (remeber to make a backup) and restore apps one by one, trying to call a keyboard after each installation.

I made a complete backup with BackupBuddyVFS, then hard reset. Onscreen keyboard worked. Then restored from backup, and keyboard causes error, so you are right, some app is causing the problem. Now to find out which one.
