View Full Version : Atari Retro Card
I just got delivery from the Palm Store. It is outstanding, and has brought back some great memories. I hadn't played Adventure in over 15 years, but once I started the game I somehow still remembered the various patterns that you need to utilize in order to move on in the game. Thanks to Mobile Wizardry for this one--I hope additional cards can be made over time--although this one is a gem and will keep me occupied for a long time.
Hey zaj, i like to get more infos bout that stuff. Thats what I always searched for the Palm (the Atari VCS 2600 were my favourite console and i wondered why they released emu tools for each and every console but not for the mostfamous one). Which games are really on that card (i found three web sites offering with three different games lists :) ..... and none included Adventure :) ). also like to see some screenshots. How are the controls ? Really like for example to play the real PacMan, Empire Strikes Back, Frogger, Demon Attack, River Raid, etc. on the Palm. Thats some emu i would be really interested in.
It should be possible to patch that tool so that most VCS games could be played with it. Cant wait to get more infos bout this stuff (never ever heard of it before :) ).
So noone already got the Atari Retro card ?

ok, lets go to the 'source' shall we?
http://www.mobilewizardry.com/press/20031011-atari.php
thats the 'official' games list in the first MMC card - i know, because i built the MMC card image myself - and, it is designed only to run the games that we ship with the card. this does not include the full range of 'atari 2600' game - just the ones which are licensed.

we have put certain measures in place to prevent this - one of the most important is that we specifically only include the CPU instructions that the games we BUNDLE with the product use. so, if you do manage to swap in a rom image; it'll most likely use a CPU instruction which we haven't implemented/put into the binary.. now, chances are.. crash crash crash :) oh well.
aaron: what about atari retro memory stick card ? :-)

dont know, its not on the cards as far as i know it right now (mainly because producing MS is a pain). we are finalizing the ESD process so you can also download these from palmgear/handango etc and, then, you can put them on MS :) the MMC card is mainly for retail markets.
Kewl, that one developer is here online. I wouldnt try to patch it, if there were my favorites part of it (another part of the prob is, that I have to carry around another SD card - I prefer the access of Bejeweled, where you only have to send them the ID of your Palm and they send you your personal activation key - works perfect for me since years. Only prob left with Bejeweled is, that its a real screen killer. Play it for a few months and you could actually see the gem grid w/o turning on your Palm ;) . thats why I thnking bout switching from Bejeweled after years of fun to Shanghai. But the recent version is a little bit too unfair. Too many settings which are impossible to solve cause overlaying similiar stone).
Back to topic : A few items of my wish list are from the kewlest VCS company ever : Parker ! They even dont exist anymore. So its surely easy to get the licensees for this games and release some Parker package for example.
BTW Your link doesnt clarify too much. This is the game list there ;) :
* Adventure,
* Asteroids,
* Breakout,
* Centipede,
* Missile Command,
* Pong,
* Yars Revenge,
* and others!
"and others" ? Asteroids and Missile Command is really kewl. But were are all this AllTime classics like PacMan, Demon Attack, Frogger, Empire Strikes Back, River Raid ? I know thats some prob, cause we talking bout four different companies (Atari, Activision, Imagic, Parker), but thos are the games I really would like to see.
ps Read now that there will be some DLable version released too. Thats way easier to handle then the SD card (indeed beside the fact, that the SD card were really kewl designed).
But beside the mentioned prob, dont let me forget bout the important things : Really waited for such an emu since I had my first Palm. Always wondered why one of the most successful systems ever which is that outdated that it surely could be emulated even on the faster CISC Palms (k, w/o the DPad/joystick placed on the newer Palms the emulation tool would be virtually worthless ;) ) were never done. and you done that development. Congrats for that amazing piece of software.
And BTW I have all of the mentioned game indeed bought (mighty eBay ;) ) and some of them become really expensive in the meantime (Decathlon and Sky Skipper were at $ 14). So if there ever would be an open version of the emulation tool it wouold be perfectly legal to use them with the Palm too.

only titles from Atari are to be included; so, no titles from Activision/Imagic/Parker at this point in time - they are seperate contract negotiations; the current contract is with Atari direct.

Hi ardiri, hi all,
looks like a nice product, but why isn't it possible to play roms that are already licensed? I have my Atari 2600 with some cartridges. I want to play them on an emulator for palm os. And I dont want to buy memory-cards with games I dont like or games I already bought.
Thx

this product is a licensed product; hence why it only includes the specific games listed. it is not a generic atari 2600 emulator. while it is possible; it is not on our project-list at this point in time.
