Can anybody recommend a software for developing Palm OS applications?
AppForge was recommended but I can seem to find it anymore.

Personally, I would highly reccommend Code Warrior, http://www.metrowerks.com. This was the original development platform for Palm and though a tad expensive, it is a complete programming enviornment. e.g. Integrated Desktop Enviornment from which you can do everything.
I have been using Code Warrior since 1997 and believe it is a very good product.

I personnally prefer the basic solution : prc-tools with pilrc and emacs... Free and efficient, much better (at least for me) than bloated IDEs...
Oh, and by the way, IDE = Integrated Development Environment :p

Okay, brain was working and fingers were not connected.
BTW, the new code warrior release actually works quite well with the free prc-tools and pilrc.
Thanks for cacheing my tieping errur. :D

I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to program an app that can make a call to a database (i.e. mySQL) at sync. I ask because I am a programmer for a web-based databasing software (hence my sig) and would like to port it to Palm.

There are over 2 dozen different PalmOS software development platforms. The choices are preferred language (C, Basic, Java, etc.), development system (wintel PC, linux box, on the Palm handheld itself), cost (free, commercial, gpl), etc. There's a big list in the middle of this web page:

Enjoy.

There is another paltform available called NSBasic - http://www.nsbasic.com/. I believe this was originally designed especially for the Palm OS and I believe it came from Canada. They also have other flavors available now.

I also recomend Codewarrior. Another fine IDE would be DeveloperStudio by falch.net (http://www.falch.net)

Hmmm....can I recommend our product HB++ (http://www.handheld-basic.com) ? :D
See www.handheld-basic.com
Note that HB++ is a TRUE compiler, not an interpreter, and it produce single prc file that run without any runtime. Pretty fast.
Hope this helps.

There are also several Basic interpreters which allow you to program on the PalmOS handheld itself. cbasPad5 is a simple, but fast native-ARM Basic interpreter, currently in beta, and thus free for personal use:

Let me throw in a recommendation for OrbWorks' OrbForms Designer (http://www.orbworks.com/) . It is C ish with the hassles of direct PalmOS programming wrapped into native object classes. Those bits of the OS interface that aren't natively supported can be incorporated as C add-ons. It supports PalmOS HiRes, VFS, and all the popular UI objects except for tables which is a limitation that's easily gotten around. It has an IDE with a GUI forms designer and can create a single PRC deliverable.
Just a suggestion,
Frank
