View Full Version : T3 WARNING: Check your Backups!!!

I thought my backups were good, but come to find out, they're riddled with sector errors. For 14 hours straight, I tried to get one good backup. I was totally unsuccessful and the same issue also is applicable to my brother's T3!!!
I tried many different apps and ways to backup with using Toshiba, Panasonic, and Sandisk cards. The Toshiba was the less error prone, but none the less still would get errors. I even tried manual file copying and it still is no good!!! At the moment, I am not very happy about this issue. In the meantime, I downloaded the freeware app called "SyncAll" from PalmGear. So hopefully the desktop backup is okay. Actually I made several copies of the HotSync backup folder and stored them on my external hard drive.
Without SyncAll, the desktop only backed up 159 files and 12MB. With SyncAll, it backed up 438 files and 18MB. That's a big difference I would say. I first tried SafeSync from years of old, but it immediately gave a fatal error, besides it's not free.
that's not good
hopefully this problem will be fixed soon

Maybe it's time for BackUpBuddy . . . it backs everything up to your computer . . . or does it make the same errors too?
Did you know that SyncAll has to be configured each time you hotsync? Also, if you remove a program and then try hotsyncing using SyncAll it will not remove the removed applications from the "Backups" folder on your HD. So I have to manually remove the Backups folder and start anew.
Also, does BackupBuddy for Desktop even work with OS5? Not the "to-card" version, the "to-desktop" version?

I don't think you are right in this. I checked my backup folder and I can't find ANY files in there that aren't on my Clie [apart from those a68k files].
I have had SyncAll on my devices for the last two plus years and I've never touched it. It just does it's job. Also, all apps I checked with Filez had the backup bit set.
Anyone else want to comment?
Hey, thanks!
I checked with Filez also! The thing is each time I set SyncAll and hotsync it does the job (backs up everything), but then on second and subsequent backups it goes back to defalut and in order to hotsync with a full backup again I have to set SyncAll again... Strange... Could it be the fact that i am on Mac OS X? I am using the latest Jaguar build (10.2.8)

I'm confused.
The version of SyncAll I have [1.1] has nothing to set. It is installed on my Clie and parked in a hidden tab. It just automatically sets the backup bit for all apps in RAM.
In SyncAll there's a pref window/tab on the bottom that says "Set all bits to back up" or something like that. Well, I have to hit that button every time I need to hotsync for everything to back up.
Another question though. I don't know if it's because I am on Mac, but I never had the 'archived" folder in my Palm user folder. On Windows I did. this is where all the programs that I remove from Palm/Clie would go. Is this strange or something specific to the Mac Palm Desktop (version 4.1 is what I am using)
Are we using the same program? This is what I am using: (SyncAll version 1.4.1)

OK, you must be using an older version which didn't have that pref window. Don't upgrade, maybe something got screwed up in a later version.

Hi alsa,
You are right. I never noticed the Archive folder is gone. When I was using Missing Sync and Mac Palm Desktop 4.0 there was an Archive folder. Could have been removed with 4.1.
I am using SyncAll 1.4.1 and it does look like ALL my data is backed up minus anything I have removed from my T3. The "Set all bits to back up" is a forced backup which would rebackup everything in RAM instead of the usual incremental backups.
I don't set that except during the first time I installed SyncAll.

BTW, I am using OSX 10.2.6. I heard 10.2.8 has issues with Palm Desktop installs so I may skip it and wait for 10.3 - Panther.
Hi,
thanks for the input! i don't really have any other issues with the desktop, so I am keeping my fingers crossed. I too will be upgrading to Panther as soon as it's available. I think it comes out in a week here in the States

There are two issues here.
The errors are the SD/T3 issue!
The backup apps have to recognize the new way that the PIMs are backed up now. We(several users) have found that you can't just copy over the PIMs without crashing the T3.
I just don't want others to assume everything is okay and it's not! I don't believe anyone wants a nasty surprise when they try to restore.

I think Botzman Backup is the only Backup app that will recognize the new way that the PIMs are stored.

FYI - I use BBVFS beta for OS5. Today, I had to selectively restore some of my databases (after the new Palm Outlook conduit trashed all of my categories :() and it worked fine. Have not had to do a complete restore, tho.

Don't mean to sound ignorant, but what's the purpose of backing up to SD? Doesn't each hotsync automatically back up the palm?

That's because the desktop isn't a reliable backup. One day when you can't restore your Palm and you have a lot of of apps, then ask this question again!:D The Palm desktop only backed up 159 files. On my T3 there are 439 files, a little difference wouldn't you say?
The desktop is also too easily corrupted before you realize that you have a problem.

Ken,
I use the PalmInsider app to quickly check to see if all the backup bits have been set. Select attributes instead of date, size, or creatorID.

Wasn't an ignorant question at all. Too bad you got a snide answer.

Excellent tip Larry. I checked and ALL were set to Backup :-) Don't know if SyncAll did that work in setting all the Backup Bits on.
