View Full Version : Zlauncher background not working on T|T3

Okay, so I downloaded Zlauncher onto the RAM of my T|T3. Then I downloaded a theme and a background image (bmp) and placed it on the RAM as well. The theme is showing up but without the background. I did a search here and people mentioned placing the background in a specific folder on the expansion card. Does this assume that Zlauncher is also housed on the expansion card, or are these folders that one must create on the card? How do I get this background to show up?

The background is not displayed by default. Did you check the "Back Image" option in "App"->"Theme Manager"? It will list all the BG Images installed in you PDA.

Just incert your sd card and go to the ZLauncher menu and select Theme Manager. It will make the folders you need for Icons, Themes, and Backimage by itself. You can now use jpegs on your Palm. Saves alot of space on the card compared to those bmp's. Your background must be put in the Backimage folder. Then it is copied to RAM when you select it. Try the Silver XP Theme. Looks great on the T3.

I am trying ZLauncher 3.62B on T3 simulator. It's working full screen (Hi-res+). But when i install to the T3, the screen shown only 320x320 pixel area. Graffiti area doesn't close. Where can i find Hi-res+ supported skin?

High Density for OS5 themes work in both 320x320 and 320x480. Make sure your using non-Sony themes (SonyHR) because they are different. I have a some free themes on my website you can try, see my link below in the signature. Be aware that if you are using a background that looks good in portrait mode, it may tile and look funny in landscape mode.

Thanks! I'm trying it right now (didn't realize those folders get automatically created). What about themes with a 'palm application database'? Where do you put that file?

Those go in the Theme folder. Just sync them over. Then go to the Theme Manager and you'll see them in there. Any themes your not using you can send to the card by selecting it and then select move. The Theme Manger will move it to the right folder for you.

You can use BMP files as backgrounds. Just don't hotsync them to your T|T3. Use a card reader and copy them to the BackImages folder on the SD card.

Thanks, but I don't have a card reader, time to get one I guess!

No problem at all,
all you have to do is to drag your *.bmp to 'QuickInstall' Card window.
'QuickInstall' saves pictures into the 'DCIM' folder of your card.
Move them with ZLauncherīs Filemanager to the BackImage folder and here we are.

I keep hearing people say this works, but I've never got it to on a T|T3 or T|E. I wish it would! I do have success using the card reader though.

I did that and it works, but...... the background does not match up with the top bar now, plus there are some of the icons on the left hand side of the top portion of the screen missing.

So, are we saying that background images can only be installed from a card? What about the sample "sandbeach" that comes as a sample with Zlauncher? It's in pdb format and displays fine on my T3 (I don't have a SD card yet).
Are there any more like these?

You can hotsync BG images that are already converted to PDB format. That's why I provide PDBs for all my backgrounds.

Thanks I didn't notice the sample pdb that shipped with ZLauncher, that worked fine. So for those of us without cards, how do we convert a jpg or bmp into pdb ourselves?

Good question, I wish knew of a PC application to use! Currently I load the images on my SD with a card reader, select the image in ZL, and copy the PDB it creates from the JPEG/BMP back to my PC.

Hi Jack,
I downloaded some of your work. Great themes, but Zlauncher doesn't seem to see the backgrounds. I hotsynced the pdb files. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the info, I'll check the file I put on the website to see if it got trashed during uploading. Sometimes that happens. BTW, where did you hotsync them? FYI, They should work from internal memory or from the BackImages folder on the SD.
Update:
I checked the BG files on my website and they won't load into my TT3. As soon as I can find a way to convert BG files to PDb that TT3 likes, I"ll upload them. Meanwhile, you can view the JPEGs and right-click to save them.

I don't have an SD. I installed them via the usual internal hotsync. I'm on a Mac running OSX, not that it should matter.

You can use Sony's PictureGear Lite software to convert any jpeg or bmp over to a prc image file (pdb) that ZLauncher will read and set as background. I use the one from my old T665c. It's version 4.5.

Okay, great. I have version PG Lite 4.4 from my T615C. But I don't see how to convert it to .pdb, could you give me somehints (or maybe 4.4 doesn't do this).

Thanks for the info on PictureGear Lite.
I was able to find v4.3 and download and install it. But I don't have a Clie and couldn't figure out how to save to PDB format. Also 4.3 only does images in 160x160, 320x320, and 640x640. Are there any other applications that can do the conversion?

To convert the jpeg or bmp to a PDB just open PictureGear Lite and go to File->Output Services->Install the image during the next HotSync. That's it.
To change the resolution of a image to 320x320 or 320x480 go to File->File Process->Still Custom Conversion. Then select the folder you want your image to be placed in. Then go to Detail Setting and choose jpeg or bmp. Then go to Resize and click the box, then go down to the fourth box and click it. Then type in the box 320 and the next box type in 320 or 480. Then click OK.
That's how it works on v4.5. I've never used anything lower or higher. But I'm sure it's still set up close to v4.5.

I'll give it try! I downloaded the trial version of SplashPhoto and it does the job too! For those who haven't used it, you can use SplashPhoto to transfer a JPEG (for background image) to your T|T3 and then move the JPEG into the BackImage folder on the SD.
BTW: For those contemplating using ZLauncher on a T|T3, you need v3.62B2 (or later) if you want to use it in 320x480 mode. It is a bit flaky right now, but it is still in beta. I notice that it blanks out part of the screen when you select a background image to display. Don't reset, just click an icon (or where one should be if you can't see any) and an application will run. Then click the Applications button to return to the T|T3 desktop (applications screen) and the screen will display normally. I reported this to ZZTECHS last week.

I updated the zip file for backgrounds on my website. It now contains JPEGs rather than PDBs. I think I'm now setup to generate PDB files that will work on T|T3s and PalmOne hanhelds in general and will post them as soon as I can. The PDBs that used to be in the zip file were all created on a Clie, so that may have been the problem.

ZZ Tech told me tha they're waiting on the new Palm SDK to come out, very shortly.

I'm holding off getting an SD card for my Palm because of some of the problems I've heard. Anyway, I needed a way to get my backgrounds into ZLauncher. I actually found this tip in the Zlauncher manual (go figure):
Get a program called PalmRAMdisk which turns a portion of your Palm's RAM into a virtual expansion card.
Then get a copy of CardExport which lets you mount the expansion card as a removable drive on your PC (ala MSImport on the Clies).
Drag'n'drop.
Load your bg's just like you would with a normal SD card.
Enjoy!

Cool! I tried Card Export last night and it is great! I'm returning my Dazzle SD card reader today because it is so much slower and a bit clunky. Actually, sometimes it won't recognize the card.
Yeah, imagine actually reading the manual! Good job. I'm a technical writer and the joke among my colleagues is that we tech writers are the absolute worst about NOT reading the manual! :D
