OK, as usual, the technical support "experts" at RoadRunner are remarkably unhelpful so I am turning to this board to see if anyone has any ideas.  I use my NR70V and Eudora software to connect to the net and send/receive my email.  I put the RoadRunner SMTP and POP server information into the Eudora program and everything has worked fine for the past year.  As of this Monday, the RoadRunner SMTP server started refusing my send requests.  Every call to RoadRunner has resulted in no help at all.  They say nothing has changed on their server but cannot explain why I can no longer send email from my remote PDA connection.  In fact, they say that what I am doing would never work on their system although I have been doing it for more than a year.  Now, I am stuck able to receive email on my PDA but unable to reply.  Very frustrating.  Does anyone have an idea how I can resolve this problem?  Does anyone know of a public/free/open SMTP server that I would be able to use to send my email?  I am semi-considering leaving RoadRunner as this is pretty close to the last straw, but I hate to switch service and go through all the hassle.  It just seems that RoadRunner is having a hard time servicing high tech users.

There's a program called Advanced SMTP Server that will run on windows and allow you to send messages. On the computer you install it on you set up the smtp server as "localhost" and on your clie you'd just type in the IP (and the default smtp port # as well) of your computer. I find that this is much nicer when sending email.

I think SMTP was initially designed as an open relay protocol. There was a time on the internet when you could use any smtp server to send stuff - there are tighter controls now because of spamming, faking etc.

You can read about how it should work here:
http://www.freesoft.org/CIE/RFC/821/index.htm

Aaah 821 that old classic ;)

Anyway, there should be loads of open servers out there, and a quick google search will find you a few long lists eg:

http://www.openrelaycheck.com/orc/openrelaylist.asp

or more specific lists like:

http://www.winwhatwhere.com/w3i4/help/smtp_server_list.htm

But, there are issues with these open servers like:

http://www.ics.uci.edu/~support/mail/newsmtp.html

Roadrunner suggest that you use the SMTP server for the dialup service that you are using. I am sure this would be the easiest option for you. They say stuff like this:

http://www.hawaii.rr.com/rrhelp/email/remote/pop/default.htm

If all else fails, nearly all UK based ISP's offer free dialup accounts which you can use just for the SMTP. Instead of using IP authentication, some ask for user name and passwords. I use www.tiscali.co.uk. And there are many others.
