Scored a Radio Shack Digi Traveler GPS unit (RS 20-1601) for $29.97 today at Merritt Island FL mall store. This unit comes with Delorme Xmap handheld software and cords for the palm universal connector as well as two cords for that "other" pda platform. This unit sold last fall for $100 and with 3 aaa batteries and software install is working fine for car use. It is being replaced by a new unit with WAAS capability soon, so the RS stores that have this model are almost giving them away. BTW, Delorme Xmap handheld alone at Staples was $39!

I must say this is a super find. I got mine yesterday.
For those who may be interested. The unit connects to the Palm Universal adapter. The container states that it works with the Palm m125/m130/m500/m505/m515/i705; however, it has been verified to work on the Tungsten C (members of the Tungsten_C group) and the Tungsten T3 (by me). So it is a good bet that the other Palm OS 5 devices, with the Palm universal adapter, will work with it too.
It comes with the DeLORME XMap Street Atlas USA which covers the continental USA for streets, addresses, landmarks, businesses, etc. The entire USA would most likely take a month to generate to a Palm OS file and would most likely not fit on any size SD card on the market. You would identify geographic areas and select them before creating a handheld map. For example I took Metro Detroit's Tri-county area and it generated a map that was 1.2MB. The nice thing is that the map can reside on the SD card (/PALM/programs/XMapHH/Maps). For most purposes it is a great solution out the box.
For those of us who need a little more, it works great with the Mapopolis mapping solutions. I personally use the Navigator functionality level or NC formatted Mapopolis maps. They provide dynamic door-to-door navigation with voice prompting (requires GPS device), in addition to the free maps provided with the unit. It worked immediately with Mapopolis without any tweaking – cool. The voice direction prompting is really nice.
Thanks,
Carl Brooks
