View Full Version : Tungsten|C: Unable to reach lower few mm of screen

This is the story:
Some months ago I bought a Tungsten|C and discovered that the device's screen could not be reached by the stylus in the lower 4 to 5 mm of the screen.
Hence, I returned the device to Palm and got a full refund.
I bought another Tungsten|C (my current one) and it worked flawlessly.
But now, after a couple of months, I'm again not able to reach the lower 4 to 5 mm of the screen.
This is very annoying when it comes to reaching scrollbars and such.
Anyone else got this problem? If so, any solutions other than returning the product again??

This seems to affect a certain percentage of the T|C's. We've had no issue with either my or my wife's T|C's, and it does not seem to be "wide-spread" from what I've read, but it has happened enough that Palm is aware of it.
In the US, Palm techs apparently first recommend a hard reset, which generally doesn't accomplish much of anything, and then they tell you to send it in for repair. The latter course was very frustrating for some folks in that it took weeks for them to get their T|C back, but I understand that Palm had run into a supply problem getting the screens from the manufacturer. Seems to be going a bit better now, as some people are getting their's back from Palm more quickly.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to hard-reset, just in case, but it didn't help.
So yeah, I guess I'll be returning my Palm once again (sigh).

Yeah, Palm's service has been great for me.
But a malfunction that occurs in aparently so many of their devices isn't something they can be proud of.

I have read about several other people having this problem on multiple forums. One person called it BOSS, Bottom of Screen Syndrom.
My Palm should be arriving today at the repair center in TX. I hope to have it back in about two weeks.
I noticed the problem about two months or so after getting my TC. I think it was happening earlier but I didn't recognize it for what it was for a while. At first I just thought that I hadn't tapped hard enough or in the right spot.
I really noticed that it was happening for sure when I was trying to tap on the down scroll-arrow in Beyond Contacts and it would not respond. At that point I attempted to write graffiti and it became clear very quickly that there was a well defined area across the bottom of the digitizer that was not responding to any input.
The interesting thing is that it is not hardware related in my opinion. My reasoning for that thought is this. If you reclaibrate the digitizer and try to tap at the very bottom of the digitizer on the first tap, it will respond. It is only after the digitizer is calibrated that it fails to respond to the bottom 5mm of the digitizer. Try it out.

Well, I am was surprised to receive an email today from Palm stating that my replacement Palm was shipped this morning at 10:05am and should be arriving in three days. They only sent me notice that they received it on Friday. Nice turn around time.
Now I just have to hope the new one doesn't have any issues.:(

Hi everyone-
I just fixed this problem on my own Palm.
This is NOT a hardware problem, and you don't have to send it back to Palm to fix.
What is happening is for some reason the digitizer calibration code is calibrating too low on the Y-axis.
When this happens the lower few mm of the screen go below the physical dimensions of the screen and you cannot reach them.
What I did was hard reset my Palm (this may not be necessary) and then in the digitizer setup, I tapped too high on the left upper corner, and too low in the right lower corner. I then tapped correctly in the center.
When I did this, digitizer calibration ended and I was able to access the bottom of the screen again!

This is not correct, it only applies to some devices. However, I did try your solution, but as a result, my Tungsten |C doesn't boot up anymore because I can't select the 'OK' button when chosing the language upon boot-up.
So erm, nope, didn't work for me :)
I'm definately gonna send it back.
