At those speeds, storing songs is faster than they can be ripped. So I am not sure I can see a big advantage to the SD.

Do any of you miss MSImport with your new T3's, or is SD access so fast that MSImport becomes irrelevant?

tanker_bob
10-13-2003, 09:27 AM
No, SD write access is actually pretty slow, but reading is blazingly fast. I did miss MS Import until I registered Card Export (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&sid=3A31A096-D15C-4D25-8EC970DFF9E5210F&prodID=44626). It does the same thing for Palm that MS Import does for Sonys, but not for free. Be sure to get version 1.10, as it clears up some earlier bugs.

Yeah, they are about the same price as Card Export, but the latter is so convenient and doesn't take up any extra room on my desk. I just leave my T3 in the cradle and go nuts transferring stuff around. I just can't see pulling the card out for every transfer. To each his/her own. :)

Tanker, Card Export does look nice, but you aren't kidding that it's not freeware. At $20 I would be hard pressed to justify it, but I appreciate your input because that would solve my problem. I just wish that Palm included it as Sony inluded MSImport (even on my old T415).

Me too. Palm has never been as supportive of utility software as Sony.

$20 bucks isn't cheap, but writing a USB driver for Windows and Palm OS isn't easy. You might try it for a while and see what you think. You can also use PDA Avenue's discount code on PalmGear (pdavenue) for a 10% savings until Oct 15.

If the file size is larger than 2MB, suugest use Card Export or card reader for transfer ;)

FYI
The file-transfer speed using Card Export is between 100-110 kB/s at my System.
Not to compare with a USB2 Card Reader but pretty 1/4 of the max. USB1.1 speed. Works far better then QuickInstall.

Do you have the ROM patch installed? If not, turning off the T3 and turning it back on slows it down about 20% or so.

Yes, I have the SD fix...
I would not be testing this San Disk card if I did not...
I don't have the $$$ to be frying cards!!!
Are you all testing this on newly formatted empty cards?
Now I have formatted this card, and migrated about 125 MB onto the card so the test is being performed with alot of files /app's on it
Does this matter???

Successive tests on my PNY (Toshiba) cards show very little variation. Try testing after a no-notify reset. That will prevent programs from loading that may eat up CPU time in the background.

Well I guess my question is how does everyone else run this test?
On a newly formatted card?
Do they no-notify reset first?
I want to do this as everyone else does so that the readings are gained within the same perimeters as the other tests.

I'm not able to announce the brand yet. Since it is not
a mass-production product yet. And I'm also testing
the stability of this card.

I don't think the size of the card really matters. Although

Clocking a batch of 40 mp3's (about 200MB) during hotsync to the card, I measured a 25KB tranfer rate.

The batch of mp3's writting on the same card using a USB2 SD cardreader gave me a transfer rate of 2.6MB

This make me conclude that there is really NO point in buying a high-speed card, but that any Panasonic card will do fine (as seen from the earlier results on this forum).

My High-Speed 32x 256MB Lexar card was made in Japan (says so on the box), and CardInfo tells me it is a Panasonic card.

Compare their speed here (http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelList?storeId=11251&catalogId=11005&catGroupId=11049). The 256 and 512 are rated 10 MB/s while the smaller ones are 2 MB/s. I didn't make this up myself.

This may be a dumb question, but how do you know if the Sandisk is an "Ultra II"? I assume that's a "better" SD card from Sandisk?

Reason I'm asking is because I have a 256MB Sandisk SD, and VFSMarks hit 400+, which is very different from the 200+ I've been reading in this forum.

alex_lorenzo
12-17-2003, 03:31 PM
Sandisk ultra II is a new product by SanDisk, comes both in SD and Compact Flash. They claim read speed of 10mb/s and write speeds of 9mb/s. I bought it from www.mymemory.co.uk, the price was ok. These cards are black and the label shows the new logo with big Ultra II letters. In the brochure they also show the supposedly delayed Wi-fi card (both SD and CF) a new? firewire reader, and other goodies.

I wanted a panasonic card, which had always been reported as extremely fast, but couldn't get one in Spain (some american dealers just don't send these products overseas, and clerks in photodealer shops over here don't seem to know that aside from their capacity, cards have SPEEDS too!), i even knew the exact number of the fastest series of Panasonic cards. Apparently the Ultra II sandisks were released very recently. IN some sandisk web sites they are just not mentioned.

I am pretty sure SD have some card batches that just get better results, I don't know where they manufacture it, etc, and until the UII, there was no way to tell one type of SD card from another.

Hopefully it'll add some info to this thread. General tendency is that Panasonic cards, also branded Lexar, is far superior than Sandisk, Toshiba etc. and such.

Well, when the T3 SD card issue was alive, the PNY card was one of the very few for the most part that worked. The PNY card made by Toshiba has a very slow write speed and that has been already ascertained by many users so far. Read speeds are terrific, but write... well... forget about it... :( My Panasonic card is considerably faster, there's no need to even time it. It only takes a second or so to see the tremendous speed increase in writing to the card.:D The PNY is a good solid card with lifetime warranty, but writing to it is damned slow!

The overall score doesn't begin to tell the story. The Panasonic leaves the Toshiba in the dust, especially writing. Panasonic may be a bit more expensive, but the difference in performance is well worth it IMO.

My SD card review is now posted at PDABuyersGuide (http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/PNY_Panasonic_SD_cards.htm). More than just a review, though, I discuss the significance of VFSMark testing procedures and test results. It seemed like the logical follow-on to this thread.

Nice review!

If I had read this earlier I wouldn't have bought a card, which is actually a Toshiba one.

Unfortunately my new SD card is almost unusable, it's so sloooooooooow when it comes to writing.
Backup time increases more than factor 10 and copying some mp3s "provides an experience akin to watching grass grow in the arctic" [Tanker Bob]

I had about 60% free space when I did the test. After formatting the card, Card Info read 968.3 MB available. The VFSMark test took about 4 minutes, which was faster than my 512 MB card."

Kenny's test time fits my hypothesis as stated in my article. For comparison, my 66 MHz Sony T665C had a File Write of 25% as well. Draw your own conclusions.

I've used VFSMark v1.0 since it was first released with other Kopsis software to make Compact Flash adapters function with the Handspring Visor. Various websites now talk about "VFSMark v1.1," and PalmGear and FreeWarePalm list v1.1, yet the Palm "Info" (after installing them) shows these as v1.0.

Is there a real v1.1? If so, where can I get the REAL v1.1?

Thanks,
John

Download VFSMark 1.1 (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=6691244B-7E95-2C26-2BB3D63CCF9A68F7&PartnerREF=&prodID=34400) and run it on your system. You can save the result to a memo for later reference. I also recommend that you time the test with a stopwatch.

Followup to my post about VFSMark. The post just above says, "Download VFSMark 1.1" and includes a link to a file at PalmGear. The README file in that Zip says it's "VFSMark 1.0". Install the .PRC, go to the Launcher/Info, and it says "v1.0". I suspect an erroneous version number was attached to this file at PalmGear or elsewhere, and the mistake stuck. I think the ONLY version that exists is v1.0. No problem -- 1.0 works fine -- it just sends people on a wild goose chase for a non-existent "upgrade." TrackerDog started me searching for this, but so far no 1.1.

tanker_bob
04-04-2004, 01:01 PM
The makefile in the archive says it's version 1.1. The About file string doesn't have the version number in it. If you look at the comments in the source code, it says it's revision 1.3 and the resource file is revision 1.2.

BTW, I forgot that the souce code came with the executable. It turns out that it tests small and large block writes (and reads) during the tests. I had previously thought it did only small block writes because of the time it took to complete. In follow up to my previous testing, I watched the test on my 512 MB Panasonic and can see the change-over between write methods by watching the progress bar. Large block writes go much faster than small block writes and you can see the change in the movement of the progress bar. VFSMark does 1000 small block writes and 100 large block ones. It does the same for reads as well.

i wonder what chip it uses since it shows as Unknown in Card Info.

i noticed that i only have a total of 489.2MB on my supposedly 512MB SD. thats 22.8MB lost! i know that the actual size of SD/MMC cards are really less, & not exact, bec. same scenario hold for my 256MB & 128MB SD's. but ~23MB is a lot, if u think about it. can those w/ 512MB SD's kindly say how much total space is available on theirs? :)

Judging by your write speeds, I'd guess that it's a Sandisk chip.

The 512MB Kingston card looks like it's made by Toshiba. It has the same poor write performance.

Uh, if someone just HAPPENED to have bought said Kingston card, it wouldn't affect the speed of a hotsync unless the sync involved writing to the card, right? But then (say, in a DTG sync with files on the card), hotsyncs would take forever, right?

I've got an RMA back to the vendor on the card, but they're only offering store credit, and the only other 512mb SD card offered there is a . . . SANDISK!

tanker_bob
07-28-2004, 06:35 AM
Steve,

You are correct that the card would not affect the HotSync speed unless you HotSync something to the card, including installing apps or data to the card, DTG, etc. I also obtained an RMA number, but I still have my 2 256MB PNY cards. I use them to hold my music, since they read fast and I rarely change the songs on them.

From the data I've seen, the Sandisk cards write faster than Toshibas, but not nearly as fast as Panasonics. Numbers here indicate that 512 MB Sandisk cards are at least 5x faster writing than Toshiba chips, maybe a bit faster. Of course, there are the compatability issues with some large-capacity Sandisk cards. I'd probably go for the Sandisk under your circumstances because of the speed difference, but YMMV and it's up to you.

applejosh
07-28-2004, 07:41 AM
Is that 512 Sandisk you're reffering to the normal 512 or the Ultra (or Extreme or whatever their flashy marketing department came up with)? My understanding was (and forgive me if I'm completely wrong here since it's early for me and my head is still full of cobwebs) that the normal Sandisk cards still had crappy write performance, but the newer Ultra cards were da bomb.

Josh

tanker_bob

The Sandisk XL/Ultra/whatever-hype-is-current SD cards appear to have the performance of ordinary Panasonics. Comparatively, ordinary Sandisks have poorer write performance than Panasonics, but are much better than Toshiba-based cards. Given the limited choices presented in the previous message, I simply opined that based on the performance data available I'd opt for the Sandisk over any Toshiba-based cards. In an unconstrained decision set, I would (and did) opt for Panasonic SD cards both for speed and reliability.

applejosh

Thanks for the clarification. I'll be looking to get a higher capacity SD card someday, so I'll definitely keep the Panasonic cards in mind.

I took a chance bying myself a Sandisk SD card (ordinary edition)

The first thing I did was to perform a VFSMark on the card. Sandisk cards is no longer as slow as they used to be. I have a 128MB Sandisk SD card which is reeeeeelly slow - much slower than my newly purchased 512.... :)

Here is the VFS Marks on my Sandisk SD 512MB:

File Create: 156%

File Seek: 1072%

Resource Access: 783%

This will do for my requirements. Rather buy your self a cardreader for transferring data than spend loads of money on a Lexar....

Just my 2cents....

Nice site. However, the total VFSMark score doesn't tell the whole story as discussed in my review at PDABuyersGuide (http://www.pdabuyersguide.com/tips/PNY_Panasonic_SD_cards.htm). I discovered that the write score was a much better measure of the user experience than the total VFSMark score. It is easily possible to have a high VFSMark total while having an abysmal write score. FWIW.

or not. The 1 gb PQI card is actually noticeably faster than my Panasonic 256 in data access functions, which is most of my use. However, the write speed is ghastly during syncing...which I do at least once daily to update databases from the web.

I've decided to keep the card. The blazing access speeds for routine use at work outweighs the write speed hit during nightly hotsyncs. And I'll use Card Export for moving other files and installing new SW.

If the write speed weren't abysmal this card would rock.
