o.k. we heard a lot of good things about the TT3. Is there a dark side for a Clie user, I mean what do you actually loose when you switch?

e.g. you have to buy software to mount SD-cards ...

What else?

Let's see - just the standard Palm VS Sony stuff...

No polyphonic alarms
You can't mount the SD card without 3rd party software

Other than that, I can't think of much of anything...

What you gain is the industry standard screen API, sound API, a little better support, the ability to run alternate MP3 players, the ability to play Audible.com audiobook files...

Those are about the only 'pro' comments I can think of regarding Palm over Sony...

I have a freeware app that lets you play .wav for alarms.

See Wavelet, here:

Thanks Ken,

what about Backups? Is there a backup prog available in the software package of the TT3?

checkmate, I switched last june from Clie T series to the Zire 71, cause Sony isnt able anymore to built small PDAs with Graffiti input. And the Zire 71 even includes this kewl DigiCam, which you could use now everywhere. And all that for the price of my Sony Clie T625 then.
Seems like Sony lost contact with its customer base, cause when I were waiting for some POS 5 T series successor most other Clie users were also waiting for some similiar small and powerful device. But Sony prefered to release bricks like the X series and this Newton like UX stuff. Both way too large to carry them around everytime.
BTW Didnt missed anything at all with the Zire 71 compared with the T625.

As much as I love the screen on my T3 indoors, my old Clie T615 faired better in sunlight.

Oops - missed that one because I never used Sony's backup:

No backup software installed...but I can't recommend BACKUPMAN enough...schedulable, you can do a device restore or an individual file restore...and tested on the NZ90, T|T, T|C and T|T3 (by me...)

You lose Clie paint (for whatever that's worth!) and as someone already mentioned MS Import, which is a really cool feature.

Also, the default video player for Clie is better, but I think that MMPlayer is better (and will be better) than both.

Everyone compares sony to palm and complains that palm is lacking the back-up thingy and the polyphonic alarms but sony is still lacking one very important feature - the vibration alert. I mean, come on, this should have been embedded in past models but lets say you "forgot". why not add this function to current models?

I know my T665 has vibration alert, and it is very useful. Do newer Sony models not have it?

Does the T3 have a vibrating alarm feature?

There's nothing better than a little vibration in your pants pocket. Oh, wait... uh... ;)

:-P

buzzing aside,

When sony had MS import, it was always a pain to download the dll to do such, etc... however, the MS Import utility stood for itself. The SD mount utility (CardExport (www.softick.com)) cannot, it needs hotsync.

One important factor is that SD cards are somwhat common and are more or less cheap. (well cheaper than their sony counterparts :-D)

Sony's gain the "wazhaat" factor to them. :-D
Palm's gain the "im a buzy person" factor.

The only real program that I missed was the MS import.

But MS come in bigger compacities, unless there is a 1 GB SD card and I missed it.;)

There should be a 1GB card soon for SD

How about Voice Recording. I am simply amazed as to the quality of my NX... how is it compared to the TT3?

AND using them on my MAC / PC is seamless.

What audio file type is used on a TT3.

*It is getting harder to recommend Clie's, I hope the SD issue is resolved soon*
BUT it just got easier to RECOMMEND a PALM site :D

Well, the ability to skin VG is not yet implemented in the T3, but I think that Vidge and others were working on this.
A big plus, I believe, is that chances of getting an OS upgrade from palmone are much bigger...

Yea, since the chances on getting ANY upgrades from Sony is essentially nil. That was one of the most frustrating part of owning a Sony device.

Card Export does NOT need Hotsync. It operates just as MS Import did. The only real difference is that you have to pay extra for it. I use it every day, and it's an awesome program.

Palm has never provided the utility support that Sony owners have taken for granted--backup, MS Import, file management, sound utilities, etc. However, this time the DIA and RAM in the T3 more than makes up for it.

It depends a lot on what CLIE model you have now, and what features you truely need.

I can only give you the things that *I* would miss:

Hardware related:
+ Built in camera
+ WiFi compatibility (either built-in or external)
+ Compact Flash slot (on many of the models)
+ Memory stick compatibility (I have lots of sticks, and lots of CF cards -- I don't want to go out and buy more SD cards)
+ Keyboard (ok on the NX/NZ, great on the UX)
+ Audio Player remote (on most models)
+ Funny input buttons like the Back key and the Jog Dial
+ Hold button feature and other battery optimization techniques (including backup) and the obvious things like turning off the backlight
+ not often used by me, but technically really cool features like printing from the CLIE or showing photos on a TV (NZ)

And a little more subjective:
+- Sony apps. Even though they are far from perfect and not easily replacable with 3rd party ones -- they tend to be more optimized for the CLIE model (eg: movie playback frame rate)
+- Sony 320x480 resolution apps have been around for a while longer [rotatable apps are still very rare]
+- I generally like the design of the Sony models better.

BTW: The latest model UX is much more compatible with sound software (supporting the SndStream APIs).

Of course a T3 is much cheaper than a higher end CLIE, and there are many other factors to consider.
For myself, I have a UX now, so I'll wait for the T4.

Just loaded up Card Export on a PC and it worked like a charm. I actually like it better than the Ms Import driver, as Card Export indicates activity and if the data on the drive is "dirty".
