All -

It's been reported on many other message boards, and I can confirm it to be true...

There is something going on with the SD slot of the new T|3 devices.

I had a sandisk 256mb card that has worked flawlessly in several laptops, my home PC and my T|C for a long time.

The day after I purchased my T|3, it reset and said the card needed to be formatted. It was okay but I lost all the data on it. (I'm glad I backed up the contents to my PC before using the new device)

A few minutes later, I tried to use Backupman to backup the T|3 to the card, and it said there was a sector error. From that point on, the card has been dead...no device - whether PC, T|C or T|3 can do anything with the card.

Sandisk has a 5 year warranty on all of their SD cards...so they are having me return it for another. Palm has recognized this to be a problem and promises an engineer will be in touch in the next day or two.

So - BACKUP your SD card to your PC before putting it in your new T|3 just in case...and let's all hope there isn't a recall on the T|3 devices and that Palm releases a software patch...

This may sound stupid but... What about MMC? Should they have the same problems as with SD?

I don't know...it was able to 'restore' from an SD card without much of an issue...it might have something to do with writing to one.

I've never used an MMC card...and I haven't seen any postings anywhere that discuss the problem with that type of card...

I have had my T3 fry two cards so far. One 256mb card maufactured by SanDisk and a 128mb manuf. by Panasonic.

I contacted Palm and was told to contact the card manufacturers as it was a problem with their cards and not the Palm itself. These instances of cards being fried by the T3 are not isolated by any means. Countless people on all the forums are experiencing similar problems. All signs point to a problem with the SD Driver in the T3.

Palm has released a patch/update for the T/E and hopefully they will do the same for the T3 shortly.

True...cannot believe PalmOne's done this...it's as though they can't be content with being on top...they either release technologically outdated products compared with what else is on the market, or they release one of the best PDA's to date, and destroy its appeal by letting a huge defect through...

This is like the sound issue on the original Tungsten T devices...

::SIGH:: I'm just glad it has enough RAM that the SD truly is 'optional' for most of my use...

I'm not trying to justify the bugs and annoyances of the T3 but what PDA that was released didn't have a few hiccups for the first week?

i think all PDAs did.

But hell I'm not going to pay a single !@%#*& cent without that problem being resolved

Maybe I should wait a few months for the product to 'stabilize' before buying?

I haven't heard of any issues surrounding the T3 other than the SD card problem (which I admit, is a major one for some folks) so I wouldn't put off buying it for that one alone. Perhaps the better reason may be pricing. I would expect to see some deals start showing up in a few months.

BTW - I've been using a Panasonic-branded 256 meg card since I got my T3 and no problems so far (knock on wood:) )

Take a look at this from BargainPDA (http://www.bargainpda.com/default.asp?newsID=1673&showComments=true):

As previously reported, many Tungsten 3 owners have reported issues with the T3 corrupting memory cards 256MB and larger. Palm has acknowledged the problem and is now asking for help from T3 owners.

This came to us via email from their PR staff:

Palm would appreciate help from customers to understand and isolate instances where Palm Tungsten T3 handhelds may not have recognized SD cards. Palm has received customer inquiries on this subject and is expediting resolution. To help Palm troubleshoot, we encourage users who have experienced this issue to provide the following information:

1. Manufacturer of your SD card.
2. Serial number of your SD card.
3. Last action performed with your SD card before the issue arose.

Palm is requesting users contact them through the T3 online support page, http://palmone.com/us/support/tungstent3/

Finally! They've admitted that there IS a problem.

I purchased a Lexar 256MB SD (made by Panasonic) and the serial # matches a list of known good ones. I did have a minor issue that may have been a glitch as it could not be repeated. It has been working fine for the last few days with much use.

So the affected units are those in a particular production date?

I have 2 256MB PNY (Toshiba) cards that seem to work fine. I've had a couple of corrupted files, but I'm not prepared to pin that on the T3 yet.

This is BAD!Sandisk chipset SD/MMC cards always have that problem in fact, but it doesn't happen all the time. But yea it is proven, one of my clients recently put in his Sandisk 128MB,the whole thing was gobbled up and is now unusable!

I think the SD card problem is a universal problem with all SD cards above 256 MB and is not limited to one type or brand. I know two people who have reported similar problems with 256 MB toshiba SD cards. Palm messed up on this one.

Beware, my T3 was running my 256 mb lexar card without any problem, then I deleted a MP3 and now, not only does the T3 not recognize my SD card, but I can not get my external card reader to recognize the card either.

Have you seen this site: http://freespace.virgin.net/jon.crawford/theproblemlist.htm

How does your Lexar compare with that listed? Mine was listed as no problems. My code on the back is nn9nn999999 (n= Letter, 9 = Number).

That one doesn't appear to be a very good as most fail; depends on the center 3 numbers.

Tanker, what are you using "2" 256MB SD's for when you have a whopping 50MB of RAM on your T3?

I have a 256 mb sandisk sd card, it seemed to work at first. I did a backup of my tt3 with backupman, and it gave a few errors at first. Then I did it after I did a soft reset and held the up button, and it worked. Now it says "unrecognized format", it formats it, then says "handheld cannot recognize this card. Any ideas?? Is my sd card gonna be usable?

50 MB is great for application to reside in RAM but nowhere near enough for databases. My TomeRaider's Wikipedia encyclopedia is already 120MB! IMDB full reviews fro 1920 (18 MB), Bible versions, Commentaries, Dictionaries (50 MB), Dictionaries from MiD, MSDict, BDicty, Ultralinggua etc (45MB), Movie Trailers (used to have about 300 MB worth in my NZ90) and MP3s and suddenly my 512MB SD is full.

Did I mention each Card Backup will take another 30-50MB depending on how much you have in RAM and I usually keep at least 2 backups?

I am sure Tanker Bob has good use for his cards :-)

Kenny always gets the biggest card he can find.:)

I have issues with all my SD cards.

Toshiba: 2-256MB PNY Cards, also the least trouble prone

Panasonic: 64MB card, nothing but errors.

Sandisk: 128MB also has errors!

I've been using a 256 sandisk SD card for about a week now, haven't used any backups yet, I only use my SD for playing mp3s and kinoma movies, and so far I haven't had any bad experiences at all, I wonder if my card is one of the ones in the "Good" list?
where can I find "The" list for the working/bad cards?
The link posted above didn't mention anything about T|T3
i guess T3 wasn't released by the time the list was made?
