Wow,my first post here. From Sony Clie I've moved on to Palm, once again :D I'm now a Palm Zire 71 user, a few months back I read on a thread somewhere ( Either www.palminfocenter.com or www.geek.com that Palm will develope a replacement for the Palm Zire 71.Rumors speak that the device will have 32MB,OS6,a higher resolution of camera, and well, maybe more features! Can't dig up the thread though :p

Maybe you have read this thread at Brighthand (http://www.brighthand.com/article/RumorMill_Two_PalmOS6_Models_in_Nov) or this thread at the Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=10087)?

I don't expect it to have the name 'Zire 71'. Maybe Zire 72 or something. Because the Zire doesn't have Flash ROM (it has 'masked ROM' whatever that is...), their will never be a Zire 71 with OS6.

I would love to see the Zire 71 with a 320x480 screen like the T3, better camera, more memory, a bigger battery and maybe WiFi.

Oh yeah, and a D-pad instead of the joystick.

I agree with the D-Pad... Create a Wifi version of the Zire 71 and I am sold!!!

oh YES ! with the "better camera" being a 1.3Mpx camera that can take videos. it should also have voice recording .. and a 'hold' button !

why don't palm put one on, like the sony's ? using the zire71 as an mp3 player but having to always worry about not touching the buttons nor the screen is a real pain.

OS6...*Drool*;)

As long as it has VG, I'm cool with whatever the specs are!:D

I wonder how fast it'll be with such an OS.

We probably won't see that as palmOne is most likely reserving all those wonderful features for the Tungsten series (except the camera :p)

The only thing palmone might consider a buisness spec. is WiFi, but everyone these days seems to want connectivity. Remember the TungstenE has no connectivity but is still considered buisness. I think the new palm is just getting things started.

I wouldn't be suprised if palmone had something very close to my wishlist around christmas or spring.:D

Adding all this features means that you would get an Tungsten. Its that simple ;) . but the Zire 71 were never meant for connectivity. Its meant for SOHOs and there the most important thing is, that the PDA is small. So adding all this stuff means only that it will get bigger and bigger and loses more and more battery life span.
the Zire 71 as it is right now is simply perfect.
And BTW The stick is the perfect solution for games. But if you prefer to waste time with second best solutions the Tungsten already offers D Pads instead of a stick ;) .

The only thing that would be kewl with the Tungsten is some Back button as with the Sony Clies. Thats the only button I miss from the Clie (nope, you dont need a Lock switch, cause when you wear the Zire at your upper pockets of your jacket you dont press any buttons. The only probs I had while playin MP3 with the Zire 71 were, when I wear it at the lower pockets of a jacket) is the Back button. That one would be really kewl for One Hand usage, when you have to handle your mobile at the other hand.

Beside that ... its simply perfect.

so i hear on the zire 71 there is no hold button, so how do you put it in your pocket so you can listen to mp3s on the road? or while biking? does the t3 have a hold button or some sort of screen turn off so it doesn't waste battery?

Isnt Palm supposed to be supporting the SDIO WiFi any day now? With that going I think the 71 is just perfect for me. I ordered the Egrips no slip grip tape(like can make it yourself from skateboard grip tape), I have an old neoprene side zipper case that is exactly the size of the the 71, so no bloated PalmGlove oversized stuff. It was made by Ergo Gear, in case you wanna track it down. I also ordered my Handmap software with 4 LA locations. all I need is a screen protector(washable reusable) and Im set. EXCEPT FOR ONE THING.....I wish the DAMN MP3 player was louder...so I went to Radio Shack and got a headphone booster. Works rather well, but a bit of extra weight and bulk for a portable unit...they both fit together in my CD player case/ workout belt. So far this palm is the best out. I saw the Sony UX50 and I had tears come down my cheeks, but then I read a bunch of posts regarding some software drawbacks...and I think with the WiFi, I can stand not to spend $200 for it,BUT...the Wifi SDIO is another $80-120, then the Sony has the Keyboard on the unit, the screenlooked really good...Blue Tooth....hmmm...Boy is that thing slick!! it does have a camera...and likely a flash Rom...hmmm, do I still have my reciept....ahhh, cant justify plunking down $500 as opposed to $250 then slowly sucking the rest out of me. anyways....(tears are rolling)...umm, Im happy.

I wouldn't mind seeing the high-end Zire's being turned into PalmOne's multimedia PDAs. Like, adding a big screen for the purposes of widescreen movies, or stuff like that.

I think the T3 looks really cool, but I am so absolutely addicted to the Zire's slider-camera that I can't comprehend not having it built-in. I think I'm insane.

The screen will shut off after a few minutes. You can press the power button to bring the unit back to life. In fact, I just installed an auxiliary line on my Blaupunkt car stereo. I normally listen to CDs at 30, but with the Zire 71 set on 50%, I have to turn the Blaupunkt up to 60. :( It sounds OK, though.

I'd personally prefer Aeroplayer (www.aerodromesoftware.com).This software allows the user to turn off the screen using the on/off button as well as disable screen tapping.Very cool

Over in the PIC Mesage Boards, we were talking about how the Zire71 DOES have flash ROM, because it can be accessed by JackFlash. I tried using JFLight, but it didn't work. A few others though have tried it, and they say it is successful. Can anyone else with the latest version of JackFlash try it out? I'd love to be able to upgrade to OS 6, or maybe even put that Flash ROM to use now (load up WordSmith, DTG, etc).

Well, I've tried the latest JackFlash (3.0b10) and the Zire 71 doesn't have flash ROM... Too bad :(

Zire 71 doesn't have bluetooth regardless of which version (US, Europe, etc).

Wi-Fi capability is coming via Sandisk and their SD card but it's probably not available until sometime in December (they just keep pushing the date back). But, for now, you can get the Enfora Wi-Lan portfolio case which connects via the universal connector port. I've written a posting:

http://www.palmonecity.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=272

And Aero Player is great. I use that since Pocket Tunes crashed on me. I love the screen off feature (I have it turned off after 10 secs) and how it disables the screen taps detection while it's running. And the sounds are amazing with the equalizer, especially with ogg vorbis files. Mp3s sound okay but they take up too much space so I'm listening to ogg vorbis files now.

As for flash, there's been so much debate about which versions (US, China, Europe, etc) have it that no one has a definitive answer. You could always try JackFlash and see if your Zire 71 has it. But there's always the risk of rendering your Palm useless if something bad happens. So be forewarned. AFAIK, the Zire 71 in the US and Canada do not have flashable ROM. And I've tried it on mine. No flash ROM.

'Cause then it would be a Sony! Or is that "Sonly"?

You probably have a non-US or Canadian Zire 71 and instead have a multi-language one, which does have flash ROM. Wishful thinking, I downloaded and tried the latest version 3.10 and still no flash ROM.

The product number for the US unit is: P80720US

The product number for the Back to School package unit is: P80721US

You can find out your product number by checking out the UPC code on the box. The product number should be very close to the UPC code, as well as on most online store sites which indicate their product number.

If you have either product numbers, don't bother trying because you'll find out there is no flash ROM.

I have come to realize that there's no flash ROM, regardless of what everyone else says.
