hi, i am thinking of getting the TH55 and i am just wondering if it is possible to add a background to the standard launcher easily. ive played with the zire 72 at staples and you can change the background easily by clicking display options and changing it.

Well the default Clie Launcher can be skinned, but not the one with Clie Organizer, at least not yet. The launcher doesn't support backgrounds exactly, so you can't easily add your own images. However there are many nice third-party launchers that offer this and a whole lot more. Many people here don't use the built-in launchers anyway. Take a look in the Launchers section of the forum for some ideas. ZLauncher, Facer, Appshelf, SilverScreen and YiShow seem to be the big ones still being developed now. There are also a number of smaller/older ones that still have some fans. I think at last count, over half of the ClieSource population was using ZLauncher.

Launchers are a very personal decision, just be aware that if you don't like the TH's built-in launchers, you have other options no matter what PDA you buy.

It's possible to copy some built-in apps from one PDA to another, but there are some that don't work, especially between Sony and Palm models. Even some Clie apps won't work on other Clies (like Clie Organizer). I haven't heard of the Zire app being used on a Clie, but maybe nobody has been trying hard enough. If you can't beam something, sometimes it works better to put it on an MS. In that case, you'd probably have to put it on the Zire's SD card, then onto your computer, then onto the MS for your Clie. I just have a hunch it won't work though, as apps like this are sometimes designed intentionally so you can only use them on the model they're made for -- to prevent exactly what you're doing, I guess: PalmOne wants you to buy their model for the launcher, even though you really want the TH. Worth a try if it won't cost you anything, though.
