Hi everyone. I just registered having perused this forum for couple days now. I've been a palm 505 owner and clie 615 owner. Recently I bought the UX-50, and I'm having lots of trouble and don't know where to find the answers. There's so much information in this forum that it's hard for me to find the answers I'm looking for. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
1. Syncing with bluetooth: When I first tried to sync I got an error message saying "unable to initiate HotSync operation because the port is in use by another application." I thought I corrected this by downloading an updated driver for my IBM T40 and not using the microsoft driver. This worked for a little bit, but all of sudden it stopped working again. I am now getting the same message. Any ideas how I can fix this? (my computer communicates fine with my clie, but it just won't sync)
2. Microsoft outlook: How do I import emails on my Outlook to my clie? I tried setting everything in terms of outlook (i.e. appointments, addresses, notes, and etc) but my emails never get synced.
3. Best way to import mp3 to my clie? I thought I used to see my clie as another drive on My Computer when I connect via USB but I don't see it anymore.
4. Docs to go? I thought I used to have these in my old PDAs to read word docs and PDFs. Do I need to download some program to do this now?
Sorry for the long message. I'm really not used to going through so much to get a gadget to work. I'm pretty proficient with these things, but so far, UX-50 hasn't been so user friendly. Maybe, it's because it has so many features...but any help will be greatly appreciated. I'll do my best to try to contribute to this forum as well. Thanks

Hmm. Try switching ports. Go to the Hotsync/Setup/Local and change the serial port to something not used by another application, and then switch under your Bluetooth preferences on the PC to the same port.
I don't know what you mean by your "computer communicates fine with [the] clie" if not syncing. What kind of communication works? IR?
2. Microsoft outlook: How do I import emails on my Outlook to my clie? I tried setting everything in terms of outlook (i.e. appointments, addresses, notes, and etc) but my emails never get synced.
There's a seperate line for email -- go to Hotsync/Custom/ and choose ClieMail from that list and click Change... You'll be able to select Outlook as your email sync option, and choose Synchonize the Files. That should do it.
3. Best way to import mp3 to my clie? I thought I used to see my clie as another drive on My Computer when I connect via USB but I don't see it anymore.
You have to launch the Data Import application on the UX in order for it to show up as a drive. You can also launch the Data Export app on the PC which will assist you in loading files to the appropriate places and in the appropriate formats for the Clie.

There's an application called Picsel Viewer that lets you view files, but not edit them. And it sucks. You have to buy Documents To Go if you want to edit native Word files or Excel files on the UX. It's a real shame that Sony didn't include this application in the software that comes with the UX. But what can you do?

Welcome. Long questions are fine. We've all been in the same boat with the UX's quirkiness (especially with the BT) so feel free to ask as much as you want. If the above answers don't fix the problems, ask more....just don't forget to check the very useful FAQ at the top of the forum -- we spent a lot of time on covering most of the basics.

thanks for the friendly answers.
I've got the mp3 import to work, but I am still having trouble with bluetooth. I guess I'll just use IR when I don't have my usb cable with me. Also, in terms of Cliemail, I don't see it. There's Mail. I changed those settings to use Outlook, but it still doesn't work.
One more thing, would I be able to use Docs to Go from my clie 615 to work on my UX50?

If I remember correctly, the Clie 615 came with D2G 5.0 or 6.0, so while you may be able to transfer the program (and the license) to the UX, you'll still have to upgrade to the latest version to get it to work properly on the UX. I'd say you should talk to Dataviz about it, since you won't be able to transfer the license to the new machine without them -- unless you're using a hacked version, I think it'll only work on one device ID.
That's very strange that you don't have ClieMail on your Hotsync list. Did you go through the whole installation process with the UX, or did you just rely on the software from your old Clie? That might explain why you're having problems with both BT and Hotsync as well.... Make sure to install everything that comes on the UX installation disk, including the mobile manager, intellisync and all that to make sure that your UX is as fully connected as it should be.
Other than that, I'll have to mull the port problem over. Seems to be a problem on the PC-side...perhaps your BT isn't installed with a serial connection option? Latest updated driver? Er... IBM tech support?

You need to "pair" the devices so they can recognize each other. There is actually a pretty good description on how to sync via BT in the Applications manual that comes with the UX. It describes pairing there. I had the port error problem as well, it had to do with the BT setup on my computer (I use the Microsoft BT keyboard and mouse).

PS when I said check your hotsync, I meant click the hotsync icon in your tooltray and then select "custom" from the list that pops up. You should find it there.

thanks for all the feedback. My computer does recognize my clie and it's able to communicate with it...it's just syncing that's causing me issues.
