View Full Version : Best Way To Upgrade from 615C to TJ37
OK,,,,,I did my homework, but I'm still confused:confused:
I want to upgrade all my 3rd party apps from the 615C to my new TJ37.
I,m using Pocketmirror Pro, Cloak, Docs To Go, AvantGo, Ultrasoft Money, most of these are registered and have to work with a particular user name. All of them are linked with my XP desktop.
Is it best to use the Sony migration tool or just backup the sony/palm folder and uninstall everything and start from scratch??
What's the best way to go about this??
BTW TJ37 looks awwsum,,,,,I can't wait to get all these newbie issues resolved so I can reallly start using this baby!!!:)
TIA

Don't change your User Name. When you install the new desktop, just enter the same user name you have now and you'll be fine with all you registered programs. You may run into some issues with OS 4.1 programs that don't work with OS 5.x but most companies now have upgrades to solve that problem. If you're using any hacks, make sure you remove them from your backup folder before you restore since OS 4.1 hacks will not work with OS 5.x. Some actually will with a new hack launcher but you're better off just making sure none of them get installed until you get your feet wet the the new OS.

I totally agree with Jim; don't change your device name!
Keep in mind also any other device specific applications, such as, JackFlash, JackSprat, JBBackup, FastCPU, etc. These won't work on your OS5 device and also need to be removed from your backup folder before hotsyncing the new device.
I migrated from a T665 and although it's been a bit of a challenge to get everything working as it was on my 665, I'm very close. There are still a couple of hacks that I miss, mainly EasyLaunch and FontHack123, but I have TealLaunch and FontHack V that do almost the same thing. Yet despite missing a couple of hacks the additional memory and speed that the TJ37 offers makes it impossible to think about going back, not even to mention the camera and wireless.
A lot of OS4 hacks have been rewitten as OS5 utiity programs and no longer need a hack manager. Here's a list of what I had and what I replaced it with:
YAHM (os4) -> YAHM(os5) & TealMaster
EasyLaunch -> TealLaunch
PopUp Favorites -> TealLaunch does this as well
FontHack123 -> FontHack V (This does everything that Fonts4OS5 does but it's free)
PopUp Names -> Still works but lost some functionality.
PopUp Note -> DaMemoPad (desk accessory)
Graspeedy -> Capper (Not a hack)
LinkerHack -> No replacement
PowerJog -> Broken Jog (Not as good but works w/TealMaster)
SyncNow -> SyncNow for OS5 (No longer a hack)
ClockPop -> OS4 Version works with TealMaster
SnapCalc -> OS4 Version works with TealMaster
BeamReceive Toggle -> OS4 Version works with TealMaster
BeamAlertHack -> NoBeamDialog (OS5 Hack for YAHM)
BeamOff -> Haven't needed this with OS5
Two other things worth checking out now that you have a TJ37:
THe Go! Go! - This utility lets you use the camera capture button to power your Clie on and off when the camera lens cover is closed. It can also alert you if you leave the camera app with the lens cover open. See this thread for info about THe Go! Go!

You can also stay with Grafitti 1 instead of using Grafitti 2 or Decuma that comes with the TJ37. Check out this thread. Read the whole thread to get all the instructions. Good luck!

Thanks! Where did you get the font packs?
Thanks for all your suggestions. I just wanted to let everyone know, my upgrade experience with very smoothly.
I waited a while because I had ordered the UC55 USB cradle. It took a while to arrive.
I installed the TJ37 Palm Desktop over the older 615. It detected the older app and automatically uninstalled it, and upgraded me to the TJ37 desktop. All 3rd party apps had to be reinstalled, but that went well except for Mapopolis. It requires new maps to work with OS5:( Oh well, you can't win em all.
TJ37 interface is very intuitive and well designed with a lot of nice features.:) I could use more memory. I may switch to a T3 in a few months when the price goes down :D
Boo to Sony on the puny little stylus and the flimsy USB cradle :mad:

I'm using Mapopolis 5.19 on my TJ37 with old maps (downloaded 2 yrs ago) and it all works fine.

Interesting. I'm using something called Mapopolis Navigator 1.37. for OS5. I didn't realize the older OS4 version would work!! Current version is now 5.27. I'l give it a try. Thanks for the tip!!
It works like a charm:D :D :D Thanks!! ,,,,Gotta' admit tho the new OS5 maps look really great. :p Maybe someday soon I'll upgrade, but not now. I've spent enough on getting the 37 + the cradle+ Media Pro Stick+ a decent Palm stylus. :(
