View Full Version : MSMount for TG = lots of potential RAM!

I have only recently discovered MSMount, and have been giving it a try. I've been a die-hard ZLauncher user since ZLauncher was born and have always appreciated it's uses, which are always growing and improving (Thanks ZZTechs!). However, one thing it does not do which MSMount does is make the Memory Stick readable as RAM, thus eliminating the need for Applications to move their DB's into RAM for usage. I did not think much of this, because ZLauncher conveniently and easily manages/launches applications and their DB's, that is until I realized how much precious TG50 RAM can be freed up using MSMount. Applications such as Docs2Go and Hi-Launcher eat up loads of RAM, and most of their components must stay in RAM or they either malfunction or cease to function altogether. Docs2Go, in particular, is very annoying, because upon hotsync, if the Desktop app does not see certain Docs2Go files and DB's residing in RAM, it automatically reinstalls them! MSMount appears to solve this problem! So far, I have freed 1.3MB of RAM, and I have only experimented with the two apps I listed.
I have to say thank you to MSMounts creator, feeling that it is every bit as much a major contribution to the TG50 community as CliePet's MCA (an outstanding achievement, I might add).

Hi,
This app looks promising, but it seems to crash my TG-50 very often. I have a 256 megs MS Pro stick, and I keep getting a MemoryMgr.c crash.
Any ideas? I also had to hard-reset it because I enabled it after soft-reset and it kept looping into the crash, over and over again.
Any thoughts or experiences?

I also had some stability issues (don't remember exactly what) when I tried MSMount.
I ended up sticking with PowerRun, which gives the ability of storing writable databases on MS.
I think the potential advantage of MSMount would be speed, since PowerRun must load the app and all associated files before running an app. Also, PowerRun takes up more 'memory' since you aren't running apps directly off the card.
But it's very stable.

I've been a long time user of MSMount and missed it when I got my NX80, but the new version for OS5 (which is now at beta3) works great on my NX80. This latest beta hasn't caused any crashes at all, but there are a few quirks you need to be aware of.
1) It's a good idea to disable it before you hotsync or new versions of DBs you have in the MSMount directory won't install.
2) After moving a file to the MSMount directory with a file manager, you need to disable and re-enable MSMount before the new file will be recognized.
3) Before you move a file from the MSMount directory to RAM you have to disable it or your filemanager will refuse to move the file, since it will appear to be copying the file to itself.
Hopefully, the developer will add an option for MSMount to automatically disable during hotsync and the OS4 version let you indicate apps that, when run, MSMount would disable itself. Handy to list file managers here so you didn't have to think about disabling it before moving files around.
I also use ZLauncher, but MSMount is significantly faster in loading large read only DBs, like Noah Lite dictionary, Pocket TV Browser DB, Mapopolis Maps and it also works great with the Riverlands Screen Saver DB.
ZLauncher (or PowerRun) is better for Apps with small DBs or DBs that get regularly changed.

I have freed up a total of 1.5 MB (so far) by moving DB's from Docs2Go, Hi Launcher, Riverland, Fonts4OS5 and AvantGo to the MSMount folder! It takes some experimentation, I HIGHLY recommend doing a backup before trying MSMount. I've had no hard resets, and only 2 or 3 soft resets. I have also installed all of the Docs2Go files I had previously left out (like the P2P files, spell checker, lexicon, Pics2Go and SmartGraph). For Docs2Go, I found that I had to leave lib files in RAM (DSlib, Graphicslib and lexlib).
For Avantgo, the main app can be run from Palm/Launcher; the Docs and Channels files can be moved to Palm/Programs/AvantGo automatically using AGConnect's server settings. I only moved the AvGoExpir file (25kb) to the MSMount folder. Hey, every little bit helps!
For Hi-Launcher, I kept the Main app in RAM and moved everything else to the MSMount folder. In my case, this freed up over 400k!
The Riverland DB files works very nicely in the MSMount folder and saves the RAM upload time of putting it in the Palm/Launcher folder...in any case, keeping it out of RAM saves you 1320k!
You can actually run the Docs2Go main app from the MSMount folder, but it is markedly slower if you do so. I've decided to keep the main app (239k) in RAM, Sheet2Go, Slideshow2Go and WordView (1616k) in Palm/Launcher(as recommended by Dataviz), and all of the remaining parts (totaling 1556k) in MSMount. Works like a charm, and it is nice to use all of Docs2Go's features for a change.
Fonts4OS5's "Fonts4OS5Data.pdb" (28k) can be moved to MSMount.
--Perhaps when the Final version is released, it would be helpful to create a DB compatibility list?--

I've used msmount since the day it released.
It's just so fantastic, as I have more than 20MB of programs installed now, but still got 5.2MB free system memory. And most of them are running just as fast as in ram.
First, you should have a overclocking software like pxaclock, overclock to 300 if you got xscale 250 and 400 if u got xscale 255. That will speedup ms reading/writing.
Second thing, never pull out your ms when u reading doc if the doc reader is also msmounted. I experienced several hard reset after pull out ms when I'm inside isilo. After I insert the ms back, the memory.c xxxx error popup, and then I have to do a hard reset.
It's not stable, but it's so promising. Just like MCA2 in previous state. Next version of msmount os5 must be great!

So far with the latest version of MSMount (version 3), stability is great on my TG50! I haven't found a program yet that won't work.

I'm a little confused. The screen shot from PalmGear for the version for OS 4.0 and below shows a "Disable during HotSync" option. Is this functionality omitted in the OS 5 beta?

There is no such function in the OS5 beta, nor is there a "settings" button.

Thanks for clarifyihg, filber. Your above post listing databases was very helpful, as well.

As I said, I'm only a recent discoverer of MSMount. Once I installed it and realized it's usefulness, I was hooked. I'm sure the developer will utilize some of the older features, if they are necessary or useful.

Actually, it's MSMount5 "Beta 4", but it now has the option to disable during hotsync and it works great so far on my NX80. :D

It seems to run faster than the previous beta. No more slowdown, and the program activates much quicker than before. A must-have for the TG50!

I just downloaded the .zip-file from the mentioned link.
Strangely there is no file in the zip. What could be the problem?

Same thing happened to me.
But I just extracted it (using the right-click "extract here" feature in WinRar) and the MSMount5b4 folder just popped up =)
But I have a question about using MSMount with the CF card.
If I want to store my files in the CF card, do I have to make sure I always insert the CF card first?
I have a NX70V.

I don't think so, but you will probably have to disable and re-enable MSMount after inserting the CF card before any of the files in the MSMount directory will be recognized.
