The UX40 takes all of these types of MemoryStick:
"Regular" (purple/blue, no MG logo, cheap), sizes <= 128 MB
"Select" (purple/blue, no MG logo, cheap), 2*128 MB
MagicGate (white, MG logo, hard to find -- the only stick you can use with ATRAC3 files), <= 128 MB
Pro (holographic white/peach, MG logo, expensive), <= 2 GB
In addition, you can use the half-sized MS Duo sticks with an adapter (not included with the UX50, but often with the stick).
There's also some newer varieties, like higher speed Pro sticks and the new high-speed non-pro sticks. Non-Sony manufacturers (Lexar and Sandisk) have their own colour schemes.
The main advantages of the MemoryStick PRO are that they have guaranteed read/write speeds (20 MB/s read, 15 MB/s write) and come in much larger sizes.
Right now, the "sweet" price point seems to be for the 256 MB Pro stick.
(However, don't be fooled by the "Select" 256 MB -- it's really two slow 128 MB sticks in one package, where you can "select" the stick to use with a dipswitch. That won't do you much good if you need contiguos memory.)
