Hey guys,
I'm willing to 2-day air a DVD-ROM full of MQV's and other unconverted mpgs to anyone who can successfully help me get my TG50, v600 phone and/or PC working together.
The DVD-ROM will have MQVs of SEINFELD, 70's SHOW, DILBERT, KIDS IN THE HALL, NEWSRADIO, WALLAE AND GROMMIT, ETC plus about 3 gigs of mpgs of other videos.
ANyway, here is my problem. I have a new v600, plus my TG50 plus my Laptop which has a dlink DBT-120 bluetooth adapter on it. I finally got my phone to work with my PC where I can send data to the phone. (Got army of darkness for my message tone and "Bueller, Bueller" for my ringtone. Not to mention a good ole picture of Che Guevara on the screen. Gotta love it baby!) However I can' get my Clie to dial thru my phone for either internet or SMS. Plus, my laptop and CLie see eachother, but I can't sync or transfer files from my PC to my Clie. When i try to sync, it tells me modem error "timeout" and when I transfer files from the PC it tells me that the file service isn't available on that device. I tried installing SMBMATE but it was as confusing as hell to me. Maybe I'm dumb. Anyway, can anyone gimme a hand? Even if you can't get me over the hurdle, if you point me in the write direction, I'd still be happy to send you a DVD, or if multiple people helped, I'd do the same for all.
Btw, Yes, I did install mobile connection manager. three letters for ya.. P.O.S.

What carrier are you using? What internet service have you signed up for with them?
When you say your PC sees your CLIE, do you mean that you have "paired" them? Also, have you successfully paired your CLIE to phone?

For BT hotsyncing, these are good directions-
http://www.whizoo.com/bt_setup/
(mainly about sharing PC internet connection to your CLIE, but BT hotsyncing is later on the page.)

Im with cingular and I havent signed up for any internet usage on I wasnt sure if i should just dial into my sbc account using minutes or pay the 20 a month for unlimited gprs usage for internet.. any ideas? and yes, i have paired it to the phone and to the pc and the phne and laptop and the phone and the clie.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere! ;)
I have Cingular too. The deal is that you have to sign up for either Wireless Internet (dial-up), or Wireless Internet Express (GPRS). You can't just use the phone to dial your regular ISP.
The good news is that Wireless Internet is only $4 a month, and you use up minutes from your regular plan (so nights and weekends are basically free). GPRS is not too bad anymore at $20 a month unlimited (their plans before were horrible).
The reason you can't just use your ISP is that Cingular has to enable data transfer on your phone/service, but they don't do it for free (I don't remember the gritty details, but read a lot about it).
Once you pick a service, it should not be too hard to get working (no promises though ;) )
If you've paired all your devices, you should get BT hotsyncing to work with the directions from the link I posted above.
As for sending files from PC to CLIE, I haven't tried that yet. But you may want to go through the whole setup in those directions, it may help (different settings get tweaked, etc.)

Madmax,
Ok, I got the clie and the phone to see each other but for some reason I cannot send SMS thru the clie to the phone.. it tells me the driver is not optimum and i need to change it or my settings... im using the mcm and the generic gsm profile.
then the other problem is that i can now get (per your instructions) my clie to hotsync with the pc but I cannot transfer files to the clie or from the clie with it.. am i missing something?
Btw, i know I havent solved all my problems but if you message me or email me i'll be sure to send a dvd out to you tommorow.
in the meantime would you please be able to keep helping me with the above mentioned problems?
Thanks
Lymond

Hey Lymond,
I'd be happy to help (even without DVD). But I'm glad to get the DVD! ;) I'll PM you-
I am using the same generic GSM profile as you (MCM), and am able to SMS (with Siemens S56.) What are your settings in 'Connections'? I can compare with mine.
I don't think I've ever sent files from my PC to my CLIE, I'll give it a try just to see what happens.

One other thing, I finally called cingular and had them give me the wireless internet, NOT the internet express with GPRS and I was able to get the pda to dial it out thru the phone and get connected, but the phone said GPRS ACTIVE. SO i called the CS people and they said with my GSM fone, I HAVE to have the GPRS Internet Express.... Anyone know if this is right? So i called Cingular CS and told them to take off the IE and all the sudden my GPRS icon is gone from my phone, but it was there before when I didn't even have the internet packages... ??????

That doesn't make sense to me, but I frankly don't know too much about the phones. Can you dial out now still and get connected?
Also, did you try dialing out from your CLIE?

Your settings are ok except that you have to have either Internet Connection Sharing ot the two connections bridged (if you use WinXP) and ensure the BT Local Network is enable in your BT properties. In other words, when the Clie connects to the PC, the PC should display connection to Local Network and not to Local BT Serial Port. Hotsync uses a serial Bluetooth port. Is your Bluetooth Software made by Widcomm? Have a look at the thread below. That's how I got my Clie to browse the Internet. If you get that to work, with the settings you have in SmbMate, you should be able to access your shared folders. And don't forget, if you have any firewall, disable it.

I am going to try SMBMate right now, I've never used the program.
Hey lymond, were you able to surf the internet sharing your PC's Bluetooth connection (with those Whizoo settings)? If you follow those directions, it may set up the networking part so SMBMate will work (similar to Romanas' directions, but I never actually bridged connections, it wasn't necessary with the Whizoo instructions.)

I have tried bridging connections but was unable to browse after. I use Internet Connection Sharing and SmbMate works flawless. I just tried it at work and it worked the first time I tried it.

I can't get SMBMate to work either, I get this error:
Failed load \*
Invalid requested network name or UNC path
However, I think my error is 'better' than yours- the initial connection is there, but after talking the PDA is unable to connect to the network.
It is talking but not getting thru. Lymond, are you sure these settings are correct?
Resource Path: \\ODELLHOME\download
Resource Type: DISK
IP address: 192.168.1.101
Maybe you should try just \\ODELLHOME for resource path.
More importantly, I think the IP address is wrong. I am using 192.168.0.1, which is the address of my Bluetooth network on my PC.
If you follow the Whizoo instructions completely, you should be able to get to at least the same point as me. I must be doing something wrong with the network name or login, but they are talking for sure.
I am pretty sure we can get things working for you (and for me!) I have everything else set up, just not SMBMate yet.

Hi guys,
Steve, you are correct regarding the IP address. You have to use the Internet one and not the one on the BT adapter. In my case, I have a Microsoft Router that acts as DHCP Server. I have two PCs and I can use SmbMate with both. Here are a few errors I managed to get when playing with settings:
- If instead of the full path to the shared folder I enter just the name of the PC (ex \\ODELLHOME instead of \\ODELLHOME\download) ,I get the error message you get, "Failed load\* Invalid registered network name or UNC path"
- If I leave the Firewall enabled, the Clie connects to the Internet, but not to the shares on any local PC. I get error "Failed load \* Operation timeout"
- If in SmbMate I enter the incorrect Group/Domain, I get error "Failed load\* Invalid name of requested server"

Correction,
I just replaced the Internet address with the on the BT adapter uses, 192.168.0.1 and it connected as well. So, I guess, that doesn't matter.

No dice.. my router Ip IS 192.168.1.1 and my pcs are 1.101 and 1.102 and my pda pops up as 1.108 but nothing... no matter what ip i tell smbmate to use, it gives me a load fail/timeout message and wont let me on.
ive tried 192.168.0.1 (my bt adapter)
ive tried 192.168.1.101 (my laptop ip)
ive even tried 192.168.1.1
nada
i have all the permissions there
ics activated on the wireless lan card with it pointing to bluetooth network, etc... i see packets going back and forth on the status window of the bluetooth network status... but nothing!
when do a connect in the network settings in the clie, it connects but then when I go to VIEW log and try to ping microsoft.com (or any other site) it allways comes back with:
pinging xxxxx.com 164.1.164.0 with 32 bytes, etc
request timed out.
so it seems that even though im connecting to the bluetooth stack, im not getting to the network layers.. any ideas?

The only time I experienced what you are describing, was when I upgraded the Widcomm BT software to 1.3 and 1.4. I use a Tecom 3030 BT adapter and if I use the original software, everything is fine. If I install one of the above versions, the PC displays succesful connection but the Clie would timeout. I gave up and reinstalled the 1.2 back. I don't know what else to recommend but findout if there is any other version of the BT software you use (older or newer and give it a try)
One more idea. The company that bought SmbMate, has released it's own version, WiFile. Have you tried it? I just did and I find it pretty good. You can even open files without having to store them on the expansion card. You can find it here:
http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&SID=D44704E7-7E95-2C3D-70F9369F9B52BAD0&PartnerREF=&prodID=58413

I am running the Widcomm software 1.3.2.7.
Lymond, are you able to share the internet connection on your PC to your CLIE? I know that's not what the goal is, but it would verify the basic setup is correct. If you can't get ICS going on your CLIE, then the network access isn't going to work for sure.

Hey guys, I got it working.. jackho gave me the solution to the problem.. it was that I needed to change my subnet mask to a different subnet than what the bt adapter was on.. Thanks to all for helping me figure it out.
