View Full Version : Why Can't I use passwords with Netfront?

I'm running Netfront 3.1.

I try to use my password for my email and it won't accept it. I just keep getting the request to enter my email name and password over and over. Almost like when you use to use Netscape for sites and it only worked when you switched to using Explorer.

Since I had been able to use the TH55 netfront before to check my email I figured one of the settings had been changed. I tried everything and nothing worked. I finally did a hard reset and was able to get on w/o the same problem. After a couple of days w/o a problem it started up again. Now I have had to do the hard reset again.

What is the cause of this and is there something to do other than erase all the data and start anew?

Search on "NetFront". I believe TreoRenegade gave some advice on how to fix the login/password problem you are experiencing without a hard reset. Also, read the top part of Tips and Tricks" thread to change your agent. Typing on the TH55, so finding the exact link for your problem is not as easy as being at my desktop (but it is close). Good luck.

I'm gonna borrow from peterb123 on this one...I just changed these settings myself in NetFront 3.1, and it works great! Just change these settings, soft reset and you're good to go. Oh, I also made a screenshot of the original text on my handheld just in case I needed to change it back...

While we are having NetFront 3.1 fun. Let's do one more thing.

For those people with NetFront, you may notice that some websites, for example Wells Fargo, will tell you that you must have Windows NT 5 and IE 6 to use their site.

NetFront 3.1 will tell them that you are using these if you make a change to your User-Agent.

Now here are the instructions.

1. Launch NetFront 3.1. If it asks you if you want to connect, just say no.

2. Click on the drop down menu and Options and then NetFront Settings.

3. There are actually 4 pages to this section and you need to be on the 4th. So click the little arrow facing down on the bottom right corner until you see you are on page 4 (it will show 4/4).

4. Select Advanced Settings and then click the little box next to Change User-Agent.

5. Replace the information written there (all of it) word for word and character for character with the following:

Mozilla/4.00 (pda;Windows NT 5.0/5.0) MSIE 6.0/6.0

6. Click the OK button on the bottom.

7. Click the next OK button on the bottom.

That's it and you're done.

Now those sites will think you are using Windows NT5 (2000 or XP) with Internet Explorer 6. Bye-bye annoying window.

Now only if we could get this root certificate error handled......

There. That works for Hotmail, and I know it's one of the tougher email clients for handhelds.
Hope this helps.

Okay, I tried the hammsammich trick of "Mozilla/4.00 (pda;Windows NT 5.0/5.0) MSIE 6.0/6.0" and it didn't work. I then tried the hard reset...didn't work. I can't get into my friggin email. I have been able to in the past. HELP! Can you imagine having this little monster and not being able to use any sites which require a password!?

Which email client are you trying to get into? I mean, I couldn't for the life of me get into my Hotmail account, then I changed the stuff as peterb123 described in another post, and WHAMMO! I was in like Flynn! So, I'm not sure what the deal is. It may be some "root certificate" thingy...I still get that error message occasionally.
But, for what it's worth, the switcheroo in the "user agent" page of NetFront worked wonders for me and many others.
???
Sorry that didn't help.

Oh, by the way did you hard reset your Clie after you changed that info or soft reset it? You posted that you hard reset it...you only needed to soft reset.

Well, based on what you wrote as the User Agent you're trying, I might have a solution for you. I see that you have (pda;Windows NT) in there, while I don't think the "pda" part is needed at all. Here's the User Agent text I'm using without problems at online email sites:

Mozilla/4.08 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; )

That's let me log in to Hotmail, Wells Fargo's online accounts and pretty much anywhere else that requires a password. Try it out and hopefully it will work for you too.

Cheers.

I wondered if any other iteration of this user agent would work. Nice tip!

Thank you, B, for that tip! I can finally access Bank of America and other sites as well.

I find that no matter what agent i use it doesn't work. yet, if I hard reset it and start with a bare unit it works. once i sync and rebuild that unit back it stops working. it is driving me buggy i tell ya, buggy! I'll try "Mozilla/4.08 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; )" Most like not work. How the heck do we get a better browser to do the surfing. the provided browswer seems to be both buggy and problematic. Microsoft must have ghost written it.

Vos, you may want to use FileZ to post your software list. Members may see a problem application. I had some beaming problems between TH55 and T665C. It turned out that a virgin T665C had no problem receiving TH55 beam but my fully loaded one could not. I would create a new account on Clie Desktop and add applications one at a time, test login, ... . This is the only way to find the problem applications. I would started with Font applications. I know this is painful but you may have so many tweeks to your TH55 that you have confused your precious machine. Good luck, we all feel your pain because we have been there. When you figure it out, please post your finding.

You may want to use Decuma to create "Short Cut" to input your login name and password. Maybe you have a Grafitti problem. Worth a shot before you go down the difficult debugging option.

Depret: Thanks. I will shuffle the programs around, take and add, and see what happens. I have no wireless at home so it means going to a coffee shop and spending hours figuring it all out. What a tough life. He he

As an aside, has anyone ever seen an instruction manual for NetFront 3.1 anywhere? Can't find it on the web.

YES, I SEARCHED. Thank you.
