Installing NetFront3.1 < 5 minutes

Firstly, I would like to thank winexprt for his simple explanations.
At first I was worried to try installing NF3.1 because I don't want to mess up with my Clie and end up with hardreset.
(and I am sure there are a lot of UX users like me)

I have been willing to pay for NF3.1, but no upgrade version for UX, and well, it's just from 3.0 to 3.1, not from 3.0 to 4.0, so I decided to install it. I called it "UXUpdate" ->for fixing several minor issues.

I found that winexprt has written a simple explanation for it.
(Note: For japanes user, don't worry, although the menu will be in English, (is 3.0 also in english, you will still be able to view Japanese pages, I have tried that. )

Here is the step again:
1. Get the file, RENAME it to to NefFront3.prc
2. Transfer the file to the parent directory of your memory stick, via either :
a. Data Import or b. Memorycard reader
3. Use McFile or Zlauncher to copy the file to Palm (Palmcard). I used Zlauncher
4. Don't bother to run FileZ or anything, just soft reset.
5. When you enter default launcher or Zlauncher, you will see only one NetFront icon, and its name is "NetFront3.1" !!!!

And after that you can press you mapped button for netfront and it will launch the 3.1. I have this setup one my ux for about a month. Gotta love it

ya, all the UXes come w/ 3.0

in theory, u could copy 3.1 to your comp and then install it on your UX once you get it, but I'm not sure if this is legit by Sony's User License

Dante 21 download (named Netfront3.prc) to your mermory stick using dataport
2.then download McFile BETA FOR OS5: beta is the key word
3.then you are going to need FILEZ v5.3 software downloaded to your clie
4. Launch McFile.
5.Go to Card1 (top right) and make sure you are in top directory so you can actually see the NetFront3.prc file. (If you don't see your NetFront3.prc file, click on folders to you see it
6.Check the box next to NetFront3.prc and then click on the 'Move' button on bottom.
7.When the directory List appears, click on the Palm icon so that the little bitty arrow is on Palm and select 'OK' at the bottom.

8.You're done with McFile, so now launch FileZ
9.At the top, select PalmCard (you might see three windows click on one that you believe you but the file in and then scroll down until you see NetFront3. Select it. (You'll see a checkmark appear beside it).
10.Click on Details on bottom.
11.Under the General tab, change the Version ID from 1 to 2 and then select Save at the bottom.
12.That is it, you are done!
13. do a small reset and you will have netfont3.1 thank god

hey man thanks for the help I gave up a couple of days ago but I found out what was wrong with it and now I have it on my UX50 thanks a lot. I didn't have the beta of McFile that was the problem!!

Also, you really don't have to rename the file if you don't want to. I didn't rename it, just did everything else stated above besides the renaming part and it works great in RAM where I have it.

Everytime I try to copy it to the main memory it gives me an error saying there is not enough memory but I have 4.8 megs left. What does this mean? I have tried to follow everones advice on the threads but it just doesn't work when I go to copy it to the memory. :confused:

having the same problem as the above - memory error message with 3.9meg available. I tried using both zLauncher - which in File manager did nothing, and from the MS tab gave error 'the format of the media was not recognised. (VFS2A0C)' - and the McFile beta as specified...

Hey there. Hmmm...first thing, make room on your clie (you told me to tell you that! :p) seriously though...it can't hurt. Do you use AvantGo? If so, go into channel Manager and select them all then clear them...that's what I always do when I need to quickly clear 3 megs from my Clie. And yeah...as you now know, don't use zlauncher, use McFile v2.2Beta3. And I'm assuming that you didn't try and HotSync NetFront 3.1 over to your Memory stick, and that you used DataImport to move it over. Try all that again and let me know how it went. ;)

I've cleared memory down to 4,8 meg, which is all I can spare without losing stuff I use, and I still get the memory error message when using McFile. How much room do I need for it?

And if I can't get it to work, are there any other decent browsers that aren't quite so quixotic to install?

Why don't you give me a rundown, step by step of exactly what you are doing (process you are taking to install it)?

OK, here goes...

Got my copy of NetFront31english.prc onto my MS, in the top directory.
Renamed it NetFront31.prc
Open McFile v2.2Beta3
Press MOVE
Select PALM as destination
Press OK
Move begins, then
See error message, which reads...
Database:Out of memory. Delete old data or unneeded applications. (0x0201)

That about covers it!

Ok...no need to rename anything. I never did and it worked fine.

Don't move it...just Copy it over.

That memory error message is puzzling me...you just may need to free up more. I always had at least 7 or 8 megs free when I used to transfer 3.1 to my UX50. Why don't you just back up everything you really need to your PC and/or MS and try a hard reset? Then after you've installed 3.1, move everything back over. That's most likely what I would do if I were in your situation...'cos NetFront 3.1 really is the best possible browsing experience I've ever had so far on a handheld. Honestly. :) I've tried every other browser available, and all I have to say is I'm glad I have a Clie so I can get to use NetFront. ;)

Well, its installed and running.

I use old Launcher III and I get both 3.0 and 3.1 Icons and can run either.

I think I ran 3.1 prior to resetting. I don't see any problem in having both versions available.

after clearing my drive to have 6.2 meg free, I still got the error message. Then I decided to try a different copy of Netfront 3.1, just for a laugh - which worked first time!

So now I have Netfront 3.1 running and 4.4 meg spare on my machine - all without having to resort to a hard reset, thankfully.

I shouldda asked you first if you had a corrupted copy of 3.1 as that happened to me the very first time I tried to do this procedure...guess I'm slippin' in my old age! LOL :D

OH...I suggest you use the "NetFront WideScreen App" I uploaded here in the freeware section. As I remember from my UX50 daze...you need all the screen real estate you can muster. :)

Rar files are another type of compression, like zip. Download a freeware program called 7-zip which can decompress this type of files. Search for it. (not on the forums)

Try using ZLauncher to move NetFront 3.1 to RAM. I suggest that you download VZ's NetFront due to you can perform carriage returns or press the enter button and go to the next line. If you did already skip step 1 and go to the next.

1) Download VZNetFront (http://jamerican.net/1src/VZNetFront/VZNetFront.zip)

2) Place on MS or Int. Media.

3) Use ZLauncher to copy VZNetFront to RAM by pressing and holding on the NetFront file and selecting 'Copy to RAM'

4) Resetting is optional. You should be able to use it now.
