SO...i am new to the whole Compact Flash Memory Card thing with Clies. I am not opposing the idea...but i want to know WHY. What is it for? The only thing i can think of is EXTRA MEMORY CARDS..two at one time! What is special about the CF card? I have been reading about them in this forum...i am still wondering. What is the advantage to having a CF Card? When i get my new NX80, i am going to get a 512MB Memory Stick Pro card, and i guess that is magic gate something. Is it necessary to have a CF card? Is the CF Card the same as a Memory Stick? What is the difference?
AGAIN...i am not complaining, or opposing...i am trying to understand, so when i get my new NX80, i will be able to use it to it's FULLEST!
Also, i have a 128MB CF Card that was used for and old Digital camera...will a 128MB CF Card benifit me? Or should i get a bigger one if i decide to use the CF Card?
THANKS FOR THE TIME AND HELP!!!

Hi,
I have an NX-80 and use a Memory Stick and a CF card. Do I have to? Yes and No. I have a wireless card that I use and it fits in the CF slot so I need that capability. The memory sticks are available in sizes up to 1Gb as are CF cards. But CF cards are generally less expensive in that size. I put all my day to day stuff on the memory sticks and use the large CF cards for multimedia stuff like video and MP3.

I could use bigger memory sticks but they cost more per Mb. I am sure there are differences between read and write speeds and power use as well. Someone else may be better able to to discuss that.

Most programs I use can run from the Memory Stick easily but not so well from the CF card. Some programs will not be able to see data on the CF cards. There is some trial and error involved in testing this. Also other Palm OS machines use the CF slot and having the ability to exchange files with those machines can be handy.

Do a search for Pelaca's CF version of the audioplayer and install that. Then put extra MP3's on your old CF cards. There is a videoplayer version for CF cards, also.

I would think a 512Mb Memory Stick would be sufficient for most people. The CF slot just provides additional options for those with spare CF cards or are concerned about cost per Mb.

Thanks for the unput. So pretty much the CF card is good for storing MP3s and other media files eh? I was planning on getting that 512MB M.S.Pro for MP3s and pics. Should i just get a big CF Card to hold MP3s and Pics, and just use a MS for games, big apps, and books instead?
What does everything suggest? Thanks for the info, this is helping!

On an NX why have an empty CF esp if you have no use for WiFi? Added storage ability at what was a CHEAPER alternative (MS sticks are getting less expensive, thankfully) ; why not take advantage of it?

What I also do is take photos with my Canon camera and then VIEW them, copy my friend's CF card to my MS all my NX.

I tend to keep on my 128MB MS everything I need but then all of misc files such as MP3's and videos on my CF card.

Not nessecary, but a preference.

So i gather that the CF Card is just an extra COOL storage space. It's pretty cool because i don't know of any other PDA's having CF features! It seems that CF is good for MP3s and multimedia. How do GAMES work on CF? I am BIG into games on my CLIE! Should i get a BIG MS for games, and a BIG CF card for MP3s and Multimedia???

Thanks for the feedback! Keep it coming!

You also can use the CF-Slot for CF-to-other-flashmemorycards-adapters to be able to copy data from other cards (like SD,MMC) to your ms. Or to be able to use those cards at all ;)

It's just extra memory.

By the way, if you use CliePet's MCA2, then you can run other MP3 players besides Sony's built in one. The great thing is that with either PocketTunes or AeroPlayer, you can put songs from the Memory stick and the CF card on the same playlist!

Joy!!!

YEAH! Now that's something that i want to hear! Being able to have songs from both the MS and the CF in the SAME playlist. That makes having a CF Card sound COOL! Thanks for the info poissonsouriant!

But what the heck is "CliePet"?

MCA2 is a utility that allows one to use audio programs made to use Palm's Generic Sound API. It is available here (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47606) .

CliePet is the ClieSource member who created MCA2. PocketTunes is available at www.palmgear.com.

By the way, you can still use your little remote control that comes with the Clie to control PocketTunes or AeroPlayer. It is available here. (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=49891)

I followed the link you gave me for the remote...is that a "hack" so that the Clie Remote will work with AeroPlayer and PocketTunes?

Which music player do you think is better? I read that there is a music player that allows MP3 files from the MS and CF to be on the same playlist...have you heard this being done before?

PocketTunes does exactly that.
