Oops, this is actually not a clie-question but a PC one. Lets see:

1)First of all your PC should not only see the clie, but both devices should be paired. How to? Check the menues of your BT-Software on PC to figure out, its easy. Once the devices are paired....

2) open the clie administration tool under "connections". Make a new one, call it "BT-Sync" or so. Then under "connect with" choose "PC". Under "via" choose "Bluetooth". Then let the clie search for the PC. When found, choose it and ....

3) set up the PC. In the BT-Software of the Dongle there should be displayed which serial port the BT-software uses, or better, provides. One of these typically two ports should be assigned to the hotsync manager (right click on the icon, under "properties" or "preferences" or something like that, and then under "serial" ). Sorry, I use german versions, I am not quite sure what it is named in English.

There is a dropdown list of all available com-ports. Choose one of the BT-serial-ports, and activate hotsync via serial. Then, you are all set.

4) Try to start hotsync (by opening the hotsync software on the Clie and chose the "BT-Sync"-connection you have made under step 2. It should work.

If not, do a search here in the forum, it has been answered before, even better than I could do now.

when I try to hotsync, I get a message on my clie that says serial port in use. When I try to find the clie from the pc to configure the hotsync I get a message saying no com ports. Why com ports? When it is a usb dongle. I feel as though I am very close to figuring this out except for these two issues.

This can be a frustrating process for even those with lots of computer experience.

First, are you using Windows XP? If so, go to My Computer, Control Panel/Bluetooth Configuration. Under that menu there is an option for Client Applications. From that menu, make sure that there's a Bluetooth Serial option, and check to see which port is assigned. If no port is assigned, pick one (i.e. 5).

Now click on the hotsync icon in your tool tray and make sure the top of the list has the Local Serial option checked. Then select Setup.. from that same menu, and find the Local tab. On that tab you can select the port that you use to hotsync -- choose the same number you chose in the Bluetooth Configuration menu (i.e. 5).

Now on the UX Hotsync option, make sure that BT to PC is the selected sync option, and hit sync. If I remember correctly, this will force the PC to prompt you to pair the units. Pair 'em and you should be all set.

Forgive me if I've gotten some of the steps wrong, or if I've missed something. My UX is in the shop so I can't walk my way through it.

"Why com ports? When it is a usb dongle. "

The BT-connection is just a replacement for the cable itself, but not for the interface the pc uses. So there is a need to provide a "virtual" com-port, which is provided by the BT-software on the pc. As it is with ISDN and some old fax-software. They just allowed to pick a com-port for a modem, and since ISDN-modems actually aren't modems, they provided a virtuall com-port to let the software use their regular procedures.

Hotsync needs to be done via serial that way to use the BT-connection.
