View Full Version : A good time to buy a UX?

Given that the UX has been out for 10 months now, does it make sense to buy a new one? Or should I wait and see if Sony comes out with something better? The UX would be a good choice for me, but I wouldn't be happy if I bought one and Sony came out with a new model the next week.

I've just bought one and couldn't care less what sony does tomorrow.

This old conundrum of when to buy in the world of computing should be brushed aside.

youve answered your own question. You wouldn't be happy.

So, save your cash, but a UX60 or whatever on the DAY it comes out and you will have your longest life machine.

good luck

Jeff

Joel W. You seem to want it so buy it now. As you say, if it's a good choice for you now why wouldn't it be a good choice when the inevitable new model comes out? Is your UX50 going to suddenly stop working after some new model is released? As I have said in response to MANY posts like yours, who the heck knows WHAT'S coming out next, after the UX50 is gone...it may even be a PDA you don't particularly even LIKE! So...as the old Steve Winwood songs says "When you see a chance take it..." :D ;)

I just bought a second hand one on eBay. I wan't sure what to expect after reading lots of complaints on here about them. Don't get me wrong it does have it's faults but it is one of the most impressive little devices i have EVER used. I love it.

There's never a good time to buy an electronic device.

I for one love my UX50, but I don't know that it's been a huge success for Sony, so it's possible that there will be no replacement with a similar form-factor at all. If there's not, UX50s may not go any lower in price because of contining (or increased) demand for them without re-supply. I'd say the odds are 50/50 that the recent spate of Clies, including the TH55, might be all we'll see out of Sony this quarter or next.

OTOH if there is a replacement for the UX50, it could be an OS6 unit with other hardware improvements, the most dramatic of which could be an improved screen. The screen on the UX really sucks compared to some other PDAs, and if they came out with a transflective or OLED screen, particularly if it were larger (just a little!) it would be really enticing to me.

In sumation, the answer is that you're taking your chances on something better coming along, but for the moment I think the UX50 continues to be the best PDA around for certain kinds of use, and the price right now is very enticing.

Off-topic: like the new avatar, winexprt. I used the same one before I was run off another board for being "unpatriotic" :)

I bought my sony UX-40 during the CompUSA sale to replace my palm tungsten T. I never regreted that decision. But in your case, I would recommend to wait for the new UX. I would have waited myself if it wasn't on sale. Plus, my plan is to buy the new generation UX if sony again offers both WiFi and bluetooth in one device with a higher internal memory. Good luck.

I bought my UX50 the day they were released to replace my NX80V. At first I regretted the decision since the trade-offs were a smaller screen, and no CF slot. But, after having this little baby for the better part of 10 months (without a replacement, which is unlike me) now, I have for the past 2 months just really starting to learn to fully utilize this unit to its fullest capacity and to have as much fun with it as possible. I have never (as far back as I can remember) loved a CLIE or PDA so much that I wasn't itching for a new unit a few months later. I am also determined to keep my UX50 through the newer releases (whenever that is) unless a REALLY COMPELLING new CLIE is released.

Hey Win,

Why do you have the flag upside down?

I do find it offensive...but that is me

I posted something here earlier (respectful and all, and only posted because I can't IM unregistered) but in thinking about it I don't want to continue any kind of political debate in this thread. Those who want to discuss it are free to IM me.

Thanks for your comments. This afternoon I went to Maison Sony (Montreal) to look at a UX, and to my amazement found that only 4 of the lower priced Clies were in the store. Missing were the TH55 and the two UX models. Why? Acccording to a salesman, Sony was unwilling to provide documentation in French for these models. The salesman said that it would take 3 months to have such documentation prepared, and that Clies change so fast that the documentation would be obsolete almost immediately. I mentioned that the UX Clies have been out for 10 months, which seemed to surprise him. According to him, the TH55 and the UX40 and UX50 are totally unavailable in Quebec stores. I can still order one online, which I probably will do. Nevertheless, it would have been nice to examine one before buying.

The UX50 is ten months old, but it's also 10 months cheaper. If it has everything you want, you probably won't go wrong buying one now. OTOH, if there are certain features you want that it doesn't have, it may be worth waiting to see the next Sony release. The TJ37 and TH55 are pretty new, but I would expect to see a new Sony keyboard model soon.

I have considered a UX50, but would really like more regular RAM and better battery life like the TH55. As it stands, I am pretty satisfied with my TG50. So I'm going to wait and see what comes next, and then decide.

i wanna tell you all something...
i have my UX for just over a month now and i can definately tell you that it is the best PDA you can ever buy. i tried the tt3, nx80, th55, and many PPCs but no one can match the features and looks of this machine.
having said that i also want to say that i had some doubts in my mind after buying it, i thought i should have gone for the SE P900 coz it has more flaunt value....:)
but having owned the ux50 for a month, i have only recieved praise for my ux! for a person who knows even a small 1% of technology will surely praise this machine...
if someday a new UX comes, i just wish it doesnt come with GSM, coz then i would have to sell my UX to buy that.

Hey Unreg!

Why do you find an upside American Flag offensive? It is a time honored tradition of showing distress first, and protest second.

Don't believe me? That's more than alright because the way I have displayed MY FLAG is, in fact governmentally approved: it's expressly written into the U.S. Flag code, which in fact was approved by Congress. If you feel the United States Flag Code is in fact wrong and needs changing, by all means feel free to write your Senator/Congressman.

http://www.veteransforpeace.org/ClineLtrFlag.htm

You by no means have a monopoly on Patriotism my friend. I am a former U.S. Army Ranger, with combat experience, so I believe I have EARNED the right to display MY flag the way I feel fit, no?

Correction, I do not live in Florida. The location listed is a fictional place from the TV series Seinfeld.

I live in New York City. I watched the Twin Towers BURN & FALL with my own eyes. I raced down with a buddy of mine THAT DAY and volunteered to dig body parts out of of the rubble. My mother's Uncle (MY Great uncle) was one of the Chief Engineers who designed The World Trade Center among other things he helped design (Verrazano Narrows Bridge) so as you can imagine 9-11 hit my VERY close to home....LITERALLY.

And yes MM, God Bless America! The Greatest Country In The World!

p.s. I lost people too in WTC Tower 1. :(

"Blue side down" = inverted flight, which would put the flag the way you show :)

Hey guys, I just wanted to know if you can tell me where I can find the lowest prices on a UX40 or UX50, because I'm considering replacing my TG50 for one of those, depending on the price.

http://www.pricewatch.com/ is your friend, as always.

Currently, it appears to be PCNation/Computer Warehouse Club: $493.45, with free 2-3 day shipping.
http://www.pcnation.com/web/details.asp?item=C15269

Check with pricewatch before ordering, though, as prices are fluid, and a few hours later it might be newegg or someone else who has the cheapest unit.
