I just noticed today that i haven't used my USB port since the first few times i used my clie. With our beautiful combination of WiFi, BT, and IR is there any use for this hard wire port? Do any of you use the USB cable for anything that can't be done wirelessly?
Ok, maybe I'm missing something. How can I do a HotSync over my Wireless Network to my PC ??

Just a thought, until I got my Bluetooth adaptor I only had hardwire connections for things.
Remember, not everyone has wireless communications in thier machines. In the average home there is usually no need for them.

I've recently set up my home wireless network. Found a comprehensive guide and set up to Hotsync via wifi. I also have BT dongle. So I concur with YZF that USB is really of no use to me now.
But I recall reading previously about a cable allowing the UX to be charged via USB. In that case, the charger (quite a large device) can be out of my desktop and save more working space.
So having something around is always better. Also it suits different needs of different users. That's why the UX is so "powerful"!

Hey guys, can't you use a printer via USB and Printboy?? That would be really handy, if you use a normal mini usb to normal usb cable (like the ones for connection cameras).

Reply to R40,
If you have your wifi access already setup, you can hotsync using wireless lan as follows;
When hotsyncing, choose Modem instead of local (USB), select your wireless connection which should already be set up in networ preferences.
Then hotsync!
hope this helps.

YZF|Champ, based on the fact that Sony didn't allow the cradle the UX to sync with a computer (forcing you to use a USB cable, in the absence of a wireless connection of some sort) I would have to think that the "intended" way that Sony expected the UX to connect to a PC would be wirelessly. However, if they didn't include a USB cable at all, that would limit a lot of customers who don't have wireless connections.

Moving large files to/from Int. Media is WAY too slow using WiFi.
Make sure you're using an USB 2.0 port on your PC (with no slow USB1 devices like keyboard/mouse/printer/scanner hooked in under the same USB root), and it's MUCH faster.
(PC Link from the UX50 to a MS Pro card is also faster than using a card reader here, but YMMV.)
HotSync is also much faster -- so much faster that I hook up the cable despite having WiFi here at home. The difference is 20 seconds versus 2 minutes sync time.
Another important use is to be able to sync at places without WiFi (like most workplaces -- yes, some of us do work).

I dont have a use for it either. I have WiFi and Bluetooth at home, but I am honest, I barely hotsync because of time. For the mass storage, I use my sandisk 8 in 1 reader.

Wi-fi syncing time should be about the same as USB syncing time if you're using USB 1.1 and if you have a strong Wi-fi signal. That is if you don't count the few extra seconds it takes the Clie to connect to the Wi-fi access point. They are both in the 10 MBPS neighborhood. Bluetooth syncing is over 14 times slower, usually at less than .7 MBPS. I use BT sync as a last resort.
I don't know if the UX-50 hotsyncs with USB at USB 2.0 speeds. I have USB 2.0 on my computer, and wi-fi sync and USB sync are almost the same.

I agree with art, I HotSync via USB 2.0 on my laptop with my UX50 and it is BLAZING. :)

I would use the usb port more but it's so much easier to use wireless. I wonder how long that rubber cord would last if I was constantly popping it on and off?

That's what I'm worrying about! Ain't gonna last forever, that's for sure. :(

When I went back home and attempt to hotsync wirelessly, I couldn't do it. I didn't change anything but it's kind of stuck somewhere somehow. I could still serve the net, but just not hoysync. At the end, I pull out my USB and "didodo" (the sweet voice of hotsync!!!). I believe this illustrates the "last resort" nature of the USB.
Wallance Matsen: if you search "wifi hotsync" under UX forum, you will find a lot of useful guides, but I particularly like this one for the illustrations

I'll have to run through this guide myself again to try to re-set up my system tonight.
