Well, my 55 will be waiting for me when I return home on monday (we left town on friday at 3, and UPS delivered it at 3:20, grrr).

Anyway, I'm gearing up for the big transfer, and really kinda wondering the best way to do it. I currently use an S320 and Palm Desktop alone (I run MacOS 10.1.5). Obviously to use the TH55 I need Missing Sync, so I bought that this week in anticipation.

My question is: whats the best way to make my transfer, so that I can keep my same user name? There is a post near this same subject here(the 2nd reply): http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=45531, but that is on windows. Whats the best way to do this while switching to Missing Sync?

Thanks folks-
Marcos

I've only done something like this once myself, so what I did may not be optimum.

Just to be safe, I made a backup of my Palm Desktop files:
Home -> Documents -> Palm -> Users -> TheNameIGaveMyPDA

Then I launched "Palm Desktop", HotSync Menu -> Users -> Edit Users..., I selected my old PDA HotSync name, and used "Edit" to rename it to something else.

I HotSync'ed my Old PDA and Palm Desktop automatically renamed it to the renamed name I had just given it.

Now I used the Macintosh Finder File Menu to Duplicate the renamed folder in
Home -> Documents -> Palm -> Users
By selecting it in the Finder, and then Using the File Menu -> Duplicate

Now I renamed the duplicated folder to my Original PDA HotSync name.

Back to Palm Desktop. I used:
HotSync Menu -> Users -> Edit Users...
And selected "New User". I gave the new user my Old HotSync name.

Now I have a Palm Desktop folder of my old PDA's stuff and my Old PDA has a new HotSync name, and I have a duplicate of that folder and a new user that happens to be the same HotSync name as my old PDA.

Now go into the duplicated folder that will be the Palm Desktop folder for your new PDA and remove any backed up files that you have since deleted from your PDA, but are still hanging around because Palm Desktop did not get rid of them. You still have the copies on your renamed directory, and if you made a backup, you have a copy there, so you can always start over and try again, if you did anything silly.

Now HotSync your new PDA. Palm Disktop will ask for a User name since the PDA does not have one yet, and you give it the name you created that is the same as what you used to call your old PDA.

The Palm Desktop should restore all the files in the backup folder to your new PDA.

I'm sure there are easier ways to do this, I just fumbled around until I figured this out. Your mileage may vary. Objects will appear farther away in the rearview mirror. Buyer beware.

Good luck.

Am I correct in thinking that Missing Sync requires Palm desktop? Is the interface through PD, and the hotsyncing/conduit support through M/S?

Yes, MissingSync needs the Macintosh Palm Desktop software.

and the hotsyncing/conduit support through M/S?

I am not sure what you mean by this. M/S - Memory Stick. There is the ability to use MissingSync to mount your Memory Stick as an external disk when you start the "Data Import" utility on your TH55.

Missing Sync uses Data Import on you Clie which allows you to mount the Memory Stick on OSX desktop like a drive. Then you can exchange files just like any other folder. Missing Sync also allows iTunes to see your Memory Stick as storage for song import/export and iPhoto to import/export for photos.

Yea-I meant Missing Sync not Memory Stick. Sorry for the confusion.

I'm just trying to flesh out how Missing Sync works with Palm desktop...
